BIL wants to tell police he lives at our address...

Any advice please!

MIL has been in touch with OH to ask if his brother, who sort of lives with her, can give our address to the police. He is being charged with something domestic related I think that happened with his GF.

He stops mostly with the GF, they did fall out but are now back together, yawn, but is asking to use our address.

I am not happy, we live 35 miles away and the police know he doesn't live here, so I am not sure why he is asking to do this. I think he is registered for his benefits at MIL's house...

I think I recall being asked on home insurance forms about anyone having a conviction at the address, so am I right that it would effect my house insurance, as neither me or OH have any convictions or bother with the law (thank goodness)?

I’d be more concerned about providing the police with false information to be honest!

Why cant he put his mothers address if that’s where he lives?

Advice? Absolutely do not agree, don't get involved in his troubles.

There's a reason your MIL wants him to use your address rather than hers/his GF's, if she doesn't want his s**t on her own doorstep and his GF doesn't want it on hers why should you have it on yours.

It's the most stupidly bad idea in the history of stupidly bad ideas.

Just think - if the 'something domestic related' is him beating her up, saying he lives with you could mean the judge will not impose conditions that could safeguard the woman.

Or if he does go for her, that you get the police bashing down your door, expecting to find him in your spare room.

Or, as was reported last week, you get a 5am raid to shake and scare him. But he's not there.

    Absolutely not.

Yes, your insurance would not be valid if you didn't disclose to your insurance company that he lived there and you told the police that he did.

But anyway, you can't lie to the police and he shouldn't ask you to whatever the reason.
  • In addition - here's a link to the domestic violence raids last week.

Would you like that happening to you?

(Because I bet it's one reason why the MIL doesn't want him there)

A definite no from me. This is dishonest and you could end up in trouble.

No! There are too many possible implications and it's lying.

Very often in cases involving domestic violence, bail is granted on the condition that the defendant has an address a good way away from the victim, which may be why the OP's address has been suggested. MIL's address may have been discounted because it could be too close to the victim. However, there are bail hostels available countrywide where people can live whilst they're on bail.

I certainly wouldn't allow him to use my address, particularly if he's not actually going to be living there so you would be essentially lying to the Police and the Courts. I'm not sure if this is the case country-wide, but certainly locally, the domestic violence unit would suss out any address before it's okay'd for a defendant to live there.

There is an offence called "assisting an offender", which is used when people give false alibis etc to help offenders.

    Do not do this.
