If you want to every week/month or whatever you could run it at over 60C for a while.
That thought occurred to me actually, and would alleviate any possible concerns.
That's what I do with mine. My flow temp is usually 50-55C but once a month I turn it up to max and heat a tankful of water.

In my case I don't actually have a water tank.

I'd worked that out, honest! It's tanked hot water where legionella is more of a concern, at least in theory.

Yes I fully appreciate that the principle Legionella concern relates to water tanks (and unused taps etc). I've never given any thought to whether there is also a concern for sealed heating systems before, but then I've never thought about them being run below 60°C before either.

If this is a normal domestic combi installation, in a relatively modern copper piped system, then there is no need to worry about legionella. The hot water in use comes direct from the chlorinated rising main and is heated without venting, so retains its chlorine. There is no storage and no circulation. My only precaution - if any - would be to clean and bleach the shower heads once a year. Water in a combi boiler and closed loop radiator system is moving it is not sitting about either.

I was talking exclusively about the heating system. I have zero concerns regarding the hot water.

It would be helpful if you quoted specific points you're responding to by the way, rather than simply posting and leaving others to figure out the context.
I thought my reply was rather specific to be fair. I am unable to quote individual lines as my phone doesn't allow me to do that without messing the reply up. I think that Is rather a harsh response really when I'm trying to be helpful. Could you help me how to quite specific lines from someones reply. My phone just messes the whole thing up.

Sorry if you felt my comment was harsh - I genuinely meant it to be constructive. I mostly post from a laptop and do appreciate that handling quotes on a phone is trickier - although I usually manage OK when I try. Different phones will no doubt handle things differently though, and larger screens make things easier.

Yes sorry, it’s late I have been up nearly 20 hours lol.

No problem, we've all done it.

Tbh, even on a laptop I don't find the quotes system on this forum to be the best - or anything near it! :p
  • So, the manual for my Ideal Logic Boiler says not a lot about the eco/ economy setting, very helpful, indeed. It says to run the boiler in condensing mode you should set temp to eco mode or below but doesn't state a temperature for that setting.

Having now checked the boiler, economy setting is 70C so I've set it to 55C and let's see what happens tomorrow morning, it's pretty cold over night here just now and the house temp goes down to about 14C overnight (or did one night when I was up in the night).

My hot water is at 49C, has always been as I find it scalding above that and don't see the point heating water and then having to add cold water to a bath or dish bowl to cool it enough to use.

I'm aware that lowering the boiler temp will save gas but if I find the house slow to warm in the morning, should I just set the heating to go on half an hour earlier? Is that more efficient than turning the boiler temp up?

Thanks for the tips re condensing, didn't know anything about that although I was thinking to lower temp anyway.
