Job Offer - Background Check - A Levels?

I was looking over a job application I made a couple of years ago and noticed that I'd listed 'history' among my O-Grades. I never did history and I have no idea why I wrote it down - it wasn't pertinent to the job at all and I have a dozen or so qualifications at a higher level than that, so deliberately lying about an O-Grade served no purpose at all. It was a very long time ago that I sat my exams and I think I'm just getting a bit confused in my old age.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor...0 -
If they are really stringent they could be contacting the awarding bodies to verify the grades, well thats what I have been told before, not sure how it works though with the DPA1998. Would need someone who works in HR to confirm.
Whether they check or not I don't know, I went to an interveiw a few months ago and was asked to take all that sort of thing to the interveiw, come to think of it they never checked them, but then I never got offered the job or heard back.
Any smart employer, if they noticed but did not care would just keep the records, should at anytime in the future they needed to sack you they would have a reason.
If its a large multi national they will check, when I first started my present job they checked all of mine and contacted me to tell me that one of the FE colleges I attended had me down as having a higher qualification than I listed.0 -

Oh my word, I'm not feeling the love tonight.
I don't think for a minute that any underpaid, overworked HR Assistant will take the trouble to compare what it says on your CV to the certificates you present. If any offer of employment is removed because of a minor mistake on 2 A levels then you must be the same person who's about to forfeit a £64m lottery win tomorrow.
If your conscience gets the better of you then tell the employer, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't care
DON'T PANIC
I work in the HR department of a Global company and we pay a referencing company to complete checks like this. We DO care as it shows integrity. If this was found out on one of our applications, it would be flagged to us as an amber alert. If there wasn't a satisfactory explanation - the offer of employment could be withdrawn (offers are always subject to referencing)

And a VERY surprise miracle in March 2017!0 -
Oh my goodness, I am in my forties and I have no idea where my school certificates are, never mind what grades I got 30 years ago. Chances are my best guess would be a lie.0

How long ago were your A Levels?
I only mention this because on my CV I have for example "9 GCSE's A*-C" (I can't remember what grades I actually got and even remembering the subjects takes a bit of effort) and "4 A Levels". Unless you've only recently left education I can't imagine why the finer details of your secondary school education would be that important. I know people that leave their secondary schools off tehir CVs altogether and it doesn't do them any harm.
I have been asked to provide certificates of all qualifications at interviews in the past - I don't have certificates for my secondary school qualifications (I'm not sure I ever got given such a thing in the first place to be honest) and told the interviewers as much but offered to provide certificates for my more recent qualifications (degree etc) and they said that was perfectly adequate, seeing as having a degree presumably proves that I had the GCSe's and A Levels to get on it in the first place. Would this be relevant for you? Do you have later qualifications that are more relevant to the job?
It's a bit cheeky, but I'd try explaining to the employer that you don't have the certificates available and see what they say.0 -
I would say that it was an error on your part copy and pasting text when you were rejigging your CV0

One of my parents claimed for years she got BBC for their A-level grades. They even teased me and my sibling when we both got BCC as not being as good as them! Helped tidy up the house a few years back found exam certificates and it was BDD!
On a serious note I would confess as even if it is not noticed know it could be in the future depending on the job.0 -
Are these your highest qualification?
How long ago.
when was the last job change?
The woops it was only when I dug out the certs I realised I got it wrong.
Don't let a employer have this mistake in the bag as has been said they can bring it out anytime to disapline.0 -
If I were you I would let the person who interviewed you know there was a minor mistake on your CV, tell them you couldnt find the certificates when you wrote your CV and forgot about it.
Hopefully they will appreciate you coming clean with them, rather than them bringing it up against you- its not a good way to start a new job.If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all0
