New Virgin phone apps ran up a bill

I must say that on every smartphone i have had. When you first start it up it will as you if you want to have data. You press yes, it then pops up a screen saying warning, you may incur data charges .. blah blah.
Pressing accept then downloads the settings for your phone to use data.
So at some point this must have happened??
I was just going to say that. I have a Ace 2 on Virgin and when I first turned it on it asked how I wanted to connect, I chose wi-fi to do the initial set up. Every time I go out, I switch it to data and it comes up with a warning that this will incur charges. Even when I download apps and select auto-update it comes with a warning and says 'an unlimited data plan' is recommended for such thingsYou'll have to speak up; I'm wearing a towel0 -

Yes, now that I recall, that is true. So you can add that as point (5) on my previous post #29.0 -
Found exactly the same problem with an iPhone, even if on WiFi is still transfers a handful of bytes per day which is enough to trigger a 50p DAILY charge from Virgin. Over a month that can be £15.
Virgin's Mobile's pay as you go tariffs do not suit smartphones. So I said stuff VM and moved the most used phone to 3 on a £7/month contract with a cashback. This delivers plenty of calls & texts for a low user plus half a gig of monthly data, better than anything VM want to offer and with this you can leave some apps in the background with a bit of confidence.
3 coverage at least in SE UK seems as good as EE that carries Virgin Mobile and 3 data speeds are way better.
If you need no data at all, dig into the settings and turn if off, or install an Android widget that can turn 3g data off at a touch and only use it when you really want to.0 -

I got a new smartphone (Galaxy S2) on O2 via phones4u last week. I had to do none of the above, as data was on by default. If I switch data off, and then back on, at that point I get a warning about the potential cost. None of this bothered me though, as I have data on my contract, and to be honest I'm happy that it was ready to use straight out of the box.0 -

Its the same with any provider and any phone in my experience . All the smartphone I have had use a small amount of mobile data even when I'm at home with wifi on all day.
When Someone gave me an iphone before I got a data plan the first thing I did was to delete the mobile data settings.0 -

I think this is the where the problem lies. On initial set up with the man's sim it wasn't a problem as it included a data plan. But when the new sim was inserted it wasn't set up properly.
TBH Hobb I've never seen a smart phone that wasn't set up this way, all of mine have been set up this way, although with some of the samsung galaxy range, especially the cut down versions, like the europa, we had to download an app to turn it off. Which was a basic setting.
I still stand by what I said in my previous post, definitely not virgin's fault, and all you can do is ask them for some sort of goodwill gesture.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -

I recall setting the phone up - which took no effort at all and was simply a matter of inserting the sim. There were no questions about anything. Although I did immediately test the wi-fi which worked fine. That's all my OH ever used on it.0 -
In theory, GiffGaff ought to provide a solution if you must have 3g ON, since they only charge per kb for small amounts (a better idea than Virgin and most PAYGs). In reality, when we tried GG for 6 months, the data bills on an iPhone were still shocking. Hence the move to 3.0

I have to say that the phone I got the other week was similar - data on out of the box.
Course the first thing I did was set a data usage warning below my contracted allowance, and set the data use to switch off at a level just below my allowance but I'm hyper cautious with data charges on a new phone (and new OS - I've never had an Android phone before - always used Blackberry or Symbian) until I get a better picture of what's running in the background trying to do what.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -
