How many toys is too many?

Instead of buying toys, go to your local toy library, if you have one and borrow them. This is a great way to borrow toys for free or very little cost, if your child does like certain toys then buy them.:j Alternatively, if you have too many toys give some to local toy libraries, nurseries, salvation army etc.
Hope this is of some help.

you've got to be ruthless , if you don't want to sell , wait until you get a charity bag and then fill it , i my experience kids have a few toys that they always play with and loads that they don't look at .
my rule is that if they haven't been used in a year then they won't be missed .

Try to also tackle the problem from the souce. Speak to family and friend and suggest the sort of toy that you would like for your child and that way you don't get yet another xxxxx. You could suggest that family members club together to get one large present instead of lots of small ones. Also you could be more radical and suggest that they don't buy a physical object for your child and instead buy something else like tickets to a childen's play or adventure park for the family. That way you are not like my sister who spends ages selling a whole load of stuff when the money could have been better spend by her friends. I regularly go through the toys and get rid of duplicates.. also use toy library.. and borrow/lend/swap toys from friends children for several months.

  • i've got sneaky over the last fortnight - i've realised that the toddler groups we attend are always happy to get different toys - so i have donated some of roo's stuff and if he wants it he can play with it once a week during toddlers :D

we also leave some toys at both sets of grandparents - it really does stop them from buying so much, the fear of us saying at christmas time 'oh we'll leave that here for you to play with next time' :D

if you have cars etc. which are in good condition they would be appreciated by somebody else. last year's shoebox appeal had a note about a little boy getting some toy cars, it had me in tears. our children are so lucky, they can barely move for all the toys they are given. they don't even know how many toy cars they have.

i have found that reducing the toy mountains means he plays MORE - he can see stuff and find any stray pieces, it's not all just a jumble.

We have a toy cupboard for our LO and the rule is that all his toys must fit in, so when he gets presents for birthday and christmas he has to sit and decide what he no longer wants. Our local Mother and Toddlers lets parents sell unwanted toys to others who attend, the rules are that all parts of a toy must be present and working and toys must be clean etc, I have got rid of lots of stuff in this way, I have also ebayed quite a few items, but you have to be prepared to let them go cheaply, otherwise charity shop, or do a one off car boot, I plan to do this with Lo's Thomas collection.
