Lead

I'm looking for a cheap source of lead. It can be scrap as I'll be melting it down to make my and my friends fishing weights I'm just struggling to get hold of any at the min. I don't want to spend £20 a time at B&Q as it would work out expensive.

Where would I get hold of cheap scrap lead, any ideas ? I've tried a few local plumers and roofers but they are reluctant to give/sell me any as they sell it to the scrap metal merchant.

Are there any plummers or roofers that use this forum in the Lincs area? ;-)

Cheers,

Pete.

Lead is very expensive at the moment... hence so much of it gets stolen!

Surely as long as you match or slightly beat what the tradesmen would get from the scrappy, they'll sell to you??

    Hello Pete.g

Are you aware of the following?

Lead weights are illegal in most sizes and non-toxic weights are widely available.

No fishing weights made of lead may be used except those of 0.06 grams or less and those of more than 28.35 grams.
In angling terms this means that lead shot from size 14 to size 8 and lead weights of over 1 ounce can be used in fishing.
While lead dust shot (size 8 and smaller) are legal, they are toxic to birds if ingested. Use spillproof containers for lead dust shot and always dispose of used lead safely at home.

Further information is available on the Environment Agency website.;)

Yeah aware of that Nile, wildlife safety has and always will be my and every responsible anglers highest priority. I only use leads of 2-5oz.

Anglers do far more for their fishing environment that the vast majority. But it's a good point well made and thanks.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

Walk down any busy road and keep your eyes open for wheel balance weights that have fallen off.

    Don’t get run over. :D

Don’t raid car parks and steal them off parked cars.

If you know anyone who's scrapping an old piano, they normally have lead weights on the hidden ends of the keys.

Iv'e noticed these are lead free now!

And as for breaking batteries:eek: are you aware of the toxicity and corrosive nature of Sulphuric acid all be it in diluted form and no one should be advising this dangerous practice.

FWIW modern batteries have little lead in them now which is why they are hard to get rid of..No scrap value!

True, but 90% of the ones I have seen lying at the side of the road are lead.

What are they made of now?

Maybe the new type weights would still be suitable for fishing weights though presumably they melt at a higher temperature which could be a problem.
