    Rule of thumb,
for any plant/tree, is the root will be as long as the tree is high, so if its 3 foot high then the roots will have spead underground 3 feet in a circle around the plant, so if you start to dig around the tree give it lots of room to find the roots, or you might kill the roots altogether,
alan titchmarch garden force program, one the many things I picked up from him,
    hope this helps,
and let it rest in water over-night to settle down or you could kill it that way to,

  • After transplanting cut back the branches a bit , it can concentrate on root regrowth without having to expend energy on new leaves

Big job indeed! I agree about the water. cannot give it too much but make sure you soak the hole first before you plant. If the surrounding soild is dryer than the root ball then the soil will pull away the water from the tree.

For larger trees they recommend that you somehow get a large peice of sacking under the root system and tie it around the base to keep the root ball in tact for transportation.

    Good luck!
  • getting rid of 12 foot holly tree. have cut off all branches and most of
stump. stump is three feet high, about 8 inches diameter.
Dug all around for diameter of about five feet, cut all surface roots,
    down about a foot..
    still rock solid.
How deep if any a center or tap root might there be ??

    thanks
