E10 is a bad choice in almost all circumstances. If you know of a tariff that is priced cheaper than any E7 or standard online managed direct debit tariff then as grahamc2003 asks I would like to see it as I too have never seen a tariff that would cost less than E7 or standard electricity based on the same usage.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

I too have storage heaters (on Economy 7) and I can assure you that they are expensive and not fit for purpose. I instead use a 2kW oil-filled radiator and, even though it is obviously run on the higher tariff, it works out a lot cheaper with a lot more heat.

Maybe something's amiss in my flat....

An oil filled rad will cost about 350% more per kWh than your E7 storage heaters.
Any electric heater will produce the same amount of heat for the same rated output, regardless of tariff. So a 2kW storage heater will output the same heat as a 2kW oil filled rad, but be much cheaper.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

We have to be careful with advice on tariffs as if someone does take the advice and moves onto e7 they are not going to be able to get back on!

Historic tariffs inc super heat, E10, off peak super warm to name but a few. I know of several old folk who would dread not having access to the afternoon boost for their storage rads, as often there is no secondary heating available and if the property has old style electric underfloor heating or warm air heating the boost is a necessity as the system was designed for a boost so much so that councils have stopped utilities from replacing the off peak/E10 meter in their properties as the next tenant may claim the heating is insufficient.

Rate wise as a rule of thumb E7 =5-6p Pkw, Off peak/E10 7-8p Pkw
  • Hi there,

I have just been looking in to the option of maybe replacing E10 with standard tariff and made myself Electricity Calculator / Meter monitor in Microsoft Excel.

I worked it out that E10 for the amount of electricity I use is the best option.
Try changing the values in Total Off-peak / Standard units Column and price per units for your suppliers to see the annual cost.

Second works sheet is used to monitor my electricity consumption.

    Hope it helps.
