I'm hoping to put my house on the market early January. I've cancelled Christmas this year-what a relief! I know someone who showed a viewer the house over the Christmas period and sold it.
  • Hi, I think there is a key balance to be struck if you decide to place decorations up, whilst selling your home. Ensuring that the decorations are tasteful and hopefully bring out the best features and character of your home, I feel that xmas decorations could be an added bonus. This is underlined by Mrs Imp's response, where the seller used appealing and warming decorations, which appealed to interested buyers.

However, as many have alluded to, these decorations should be tactful; they should go hand in hand with the type of property that you have and also the overall interior design. Whilst some of the replies to the thread are a bit harsh in response, this really demonstrates that when selling your home you have to consider all the potential buyers that you may come across.

So, a good balance must be struck. Good luck and keep us updated with how the sale goes.:j

Thank you for all your responses. We certainly don't go over board with the decorations. I was planning to put them up in a couple of weeks time so I think I will stick with that and as you say, keep it tasteful!! :)

Small tree this year, I'd suggest. Maybe even one on a side table.

How many of us take the tree and 'stuff' down only to say 'OMG doesn't it look big/clear/empty'. That's how you want your viewers to see it - not with a tree crammed into a corner where there's usually nowt.

Definitely no blu-tac, and definitely nothing hanging from the ceiling :) Something sparkly either side of the fireplace might look nice, but I'd keep it extremely simple/stick to one colour like silver.

Ooh interesting thread, our house is currently up for sale and we have been pondering the same question.

Ours are now up, but we've got a smaller tree (slim version so it's still tall). We haven't put up as many decorations as usual but as we get plenty of notice of viewings I figured if we had any viewings I could easier put them away and just leave the tree up.

It depends on what your selling and to who.

if its a 4 bed detached house aimed at families, I would go for it (in a tasteful way!), they will see the homeliness of it and can fall in love with the thought of their own Xmas there.

if its a London bachelor pad a stone’s throw away from the city, don’t even touch the tinsel.
