Are winnings taken as income when claiming?

Hello all :)

I understand that winnings from betting/lottery etc are not taxed in the UK, however, could anyone tell me whether they are considered when applying for HB and other benefits? I'm only talking £100 here and there, nothing life changing unfortunately!

Many thanks.

No, though you're subject to the usual capital rules if you have a big win.

And no you can't claim WTC for matched betting (someone did ask that once!)
  • Ha ha well I wasn't going to tell but I may be going self employed in the next few months so also worried about the implications there. HB normally want to see bank statements when things change.

    What is matched betting?
  • Try looking on the matched betting board ;)

It's a way of extracting money from bookies without risk or gambling.
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

keep things in cash in the shops? most shops pay out cash for about 150 or more lottery wins (scratchies etc)

i actually went to the job centre a few years ago chuffed, and let slip that i just won 50 quid... with a fiver disregard, they;ll take it off the benefit...

just think of the hundreds u loose... your prob not winning, but when u do its counted? !!!!!!?

No, they will not - unless you are a career gambler, any winnings from gambling, bingo etc are counted as capital not income.

Makes you wonder how people can afford to gamble on benefits.
