Hiya
Please help us.
We work for a well known bed retailer who has been having finicial difficulties staying afloat.
We were advised a month ago we would be paid on 21st Dec and asked to work Sundays etc to help out the company, ( 7 day weeks) , so everyone has done this on the promise we would get paid 21st. With the Sundays completed we now been told we not being paid till Dec 28th !!!! How are we going to buy xmas food, xmas presents, how do you tell your child Santa didnt come this year because you got no money.
We have taken the way we been treated on the chin this year.
We had our bonus cut, we had to work all the jubliee bank holidays etc,
Expotent is the owner of the company who has apparently made this decision with the excuse that it would benefit us between the 21st Dec - 28th Jan as thats a long period of time ( although for the last 12 years its been paid before !!!)
The reality is the figures for the company go out in Dec, so if we got paid before it would look bad on the income.
Surely there is a moral obligation to this, how can we get presents for our kids !! They had it black and white in an email stating it would be the 21st.
Please help us, we reallly need some advise. Lots of worried and upset employees

What date of the month do you normally get paid.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
The company are bad for doing this, but to be honest I personally wouldn't want to buy all my presents and food 4 days before Christmas.
Do you have any other funds available? Credit cards? Overdraft? That's what credit is there for, emergencies like these.0 -
I don't think there is much you can do, my employer is paying us on 21st Dec as so many people have kicked up a fuss when to be honest, I don't want paying before xmas as we don't normally get paid until 27th anyway so it's going to be a long time til 27th Jan.
It's a shame you have left budgeting for xmas so very late and dependent on one months salary, I don't know how you explain that to your kids to be honest, maybe use this experience for next year and try to plan further in advance as to be honest, we all know when xmas falls.
As for food etc, you can do xmas dinner very cheaply if you shop around.Aug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -
It might be worth posting on the Debt Free Wannabe board also. This board might be able to help with the rights and wrongs of what your employer is doing to you but DFW is a much better place if you also would like some non-judgemental support on managing financially until you are paid.0

I admit to being somewhat confused. Whether or not you worked on Sundays has nothing at all to do with your pay date unless you were expecting to pay for Christmas with your overtime - which I know some people may do, but it isn't a reliable method of paying for Christmas. Otherwise, you are being paid as normal on 28th of the month, and you were paid as normal a few days ago. If you hadn't saved enough for Christmas prior to 28th November, the Christmas was always coming out of this wage packet. The company may have promised you an earlier payment date, but it would still have been the money for 28 Decemmber - 28 January. However you look at this, you were always going to be short.0 -

Yes there is, I saw him round the back of our local shopping centre having a fag break.0 -
I don't see how paying a week late helps the companies Decemeber results - unless they don't have a December 31st year end? the cash for wages would still go out during December.
Our contracts all say we will be paid on 31st of the month, now they may bring it forward for xmas as a nice gesture but they could also change mind beforehand. As long as we are paid by 31st, there is nothing we could do about it, as we have been paid correctly per our contract.
Before you were told you would be paid early in Dec (ie last month) how did you think you would cover Xmas costs?0 -

You - Santa's not coming because I got no money.
Child - You mean you pay Santa to come around? I thought he came down the chimney, Free of Charge. How much you paying "Good Ole Santa" anyway?
You - NO. You don't understand. I mean he does come down the chimney free of charge. What I meant about I got no money is... well, err.....erm...
Child - Don't worry. At least we have a roof over our heads and beds to sleep in tonight. We're not homeless, are we. It could be worse.
You - Well we're not homeless but ABOUT THOSE BED.... Once upon a time there was this big company making beds...
....Just before xmas the family decided to sell their beds and the child lived happily ever after with their Samsung Galaxy doubling up as a mattress. :rotfl:0
