Using wifi and Skype abroad with MiFi?

I have a question about using wifi outside the UK.
I'm assuming that if wifi is available, wifi clicks in before data. So if roaming data is switched off, I can use wifi without worrying about cost. Is that correct? (I'd be using apps and Skype.)
Also, I've read about MiFi, which if I understand correctly converts a mobile signal to wifi. I'm assuming that a mobile signal will be far easier to find than a wifi hotspot. I'll be going to Switzerland and South Africa. Does it cost to use MiFi, apart from the cost of the router unit? Could I insert another SIM and use this to connect my G300? I'd be looking at a 'free' SIM with some value just in case.
This unlocked Huawei E5331 MiFi looks reasonable at £46:

Thanks very much for your insight.

Personally I am extremely cautious about using contract SIMs abroad. On an Android phone you can turn off "Data Connection" and "Data roaming" as you leave the UK and you SHOULD be ok.
If you buy a local SIM you can use it in an unlocked MiFi. If you are doing this I suggest you research the network you intend to use and have the APN settings on a piece of paper with you before you leave.
Also buy a non "3" PAYG SIM in the UK and practice setting the APN and getting it to work before you leave.
If you get a Vodafone PAYG phone SIM then for Switzerland their £2 for 25MB of data a day applies. This might be useful with £10 on it anyway and the £10 top up will get you some data to practice with in the UK !0 -
Excellent advice, thank you.
I think I'll postpone the purchase of an unlocked MiFi, and will 'practise' with my phone on the SIMS you suggest.0
