Can you recommend cheap but safe areas of Glasgow for renting, close to the centre?

As per my London thread, I'm looking for cheap but safe areas in Glasgow.

I'm looking at potentially moving to 1 of 5 major cities for work, so investigating rental costs so when I have job interviews I know what salary I'll need to accommadate varying rental costs.

I will be looking for a room to rent in a shared house there, so I’m looking for a balance of a decent area which is safe, but also good value/ affordable. Something less than £500 pcm for a double room ideally.

Any recommendations are welcome as I’m from Durham so have no local knowledge, and can then use the recommendations when I look on Spare Room etc.

Many thanks :)

The WEst End would be your best bet, and you wouldn't need to spend £500 PCM for a room in a shared house.

Areas to check out include Hyndland, North Kelvinside, Hillhead, Kelvinbridge, and yorkhill.

All are between 1 and 2 miles away from the city centre and have nice bars, restaurants and parks.

Be warned that a lot of estate agents will try and class areas that are a bit further out and not as nice as the "west end" when they are not really, they are just in the west side of the city.

I would think there is no need to share, you could get a 1 bed flat for around £400.

A relative has just moved from London to Glasgow for work he is now paying the same rent for a two bed flat as he was for a room in a shared flat in London. He has gone for a 2 bed 2 bath West End apartment with a view to sharing the place at some point and the rent is under £750 pm have a look on Rightmove there are lots of decent places to be had.

Think you would struggle to get something decent in a good area close to the city centre for that much.

You'll get single bedroom flat in the city for £450+ no problem. There are a couple available at the moment in Merchant City that look OK. Some nice flats at Glasgow Harbour for £650+ with underground secured parking.
  • Brilliant replies, thank you everyone :)

I'll get looking on Spareroom tonight. I do prefer flat/house sharing as it's cheaper and if you pick the housemates well, a good way to start friends/ good acquaintances.
