Are you working at city centre? If yes, get somewhere with good public transport link, which save you ££ for parking in city center.
If you go to spareroom.co.uk, you can find plenty of option of professional house share.
If you going at the west of city center, avoid Ladywood area.
  • Hi All,

Thanks for so many replies! I will look on Spareroom at all the places you've recommended :)

To answer a few of the questions:

    * I don't have a job in London or Birmingham yet, but I'm applying to companies there as well as 3 other cities which are strong financial service areas, as that's my field.

I have a friend in Islington in London, so can quite easily view flats in London as he'll let me crash on the floor for a couple of weeks! (he just rents a room)

    * I'm 36 years old. I'd like somewhere close to things to do, as in my last move for a job this was a big mistake - I moved somewhere where it was an hour before you could get out and about, making week nights depressing and weekends expensive.

Equally though, I'm looking to save a lot over the next few years, so wouldn't want to be very close to lots of shops and fashionable restaurants - that would make not spending a bit disheartening.

    Thanks again everyone :)

Streatham might fit the bill too. It's cheap because the High Street is !!!!!! but it's fairly safe. It's zone 3, so not too far out.
    Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
    House buying: Finished!
Next task: Lots and lots of DIY
