made redundant yesterday

  • I claimed Jobseekers Allowance online in May this year.

As soon as I ticked the box for "married", I had to fill in everything (savings, pension, etc) but I knew I was only entitled to 6 months contribution based JSA as my husband has a pension.

I don't know your circumstances but I would claim via phone, don't be put off by recorded message as I was, the dining room table was covered in paperwork, took ages. When I got to Jobcentre & explained, they had a print-out of online claim & just struck lines through virtually everything.

You will be entitled to 6 months JSA Contribution Based at the minimum. If there is no other income/savings to disqualify you, you may be entitled to more. Contribution JSA is not means tested.
  • You can claim JSA contribution based BUT if you have savings (and that is everything - current a/c - classed as savings, "ordinary savings", pension. etc, above £16000 in your name, your claim could/would be reduced - £1 for every £250 over £6000 I think.

Someone with more knowledge than me will post and let you know.

Rather than guessing why not try to research what you think you know so you can be sure one way or another or find a link that helps.

52 is a young age & you have options. Australia, if you qualify could be a wonderful place to live & work. No economic problems there or job shortages.
Put your belongings into storage & let your house/ flat out. Go live in Malaysia where the rent is peanuts & the cost of living really cheap.
If you have worked 30 years in the UK you are already assured of a full state pension.
If your opportunities look bleak just go & enjoy some new experiences.:j

I was made redundant three times before age 30 - the second time the day I got back from my honeymoon. Its a learning curve & the world is a big place.

"General Skilled Migration visas are only available to applicants between 18 and 49 years of age." Does that mean Australia does not agree 52 is young?
  • New Zealand accept skilled migrant workers up to 55. Sponsorship is always available in Australia but admittedly gets harder with age.
Regardless, I wish the OP the very best with his life changing challenge & I think he is right leaving a little breathing space until the new year.

..... but I took a voluntary redundancy offer which states I must *NOT* start or accept an offer of employment within 28 days of my last working day (30/11/12), ....

Is this kind of condition enforceable? I didn't think restraint of trade was allowed? Maybe you could pop down to the local citizens advice bureau and ask one of their lawyers?
  • I worked at a training company a while ago offering training programmes for people that had been made redundant. If you ask your local jobcentre about courses available, you may have the opportunity to explore different areas which may lead to a different career path.

You also requested a link for a cv template. Try this website, it might help with some resources for you https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/Pages/Home.aspx/

Just to back up the above,

A local support group I used have said,

JC+ should have a list of organisations that offer help but you have to ask for it.
