It's a wonder any of us old folk ever made it to adulthood before the advent of combi boilers
I wouldn't quite put myself in the old folks category but how well I remember ice on the bedroom windows and running downstairs to get dressed in front of the heater when I was a child in the 70s and 80s. The house I grew up in had a Potterton warm air heating system which only had vents downstairs.
I'm guessing the theory was that you could afford to have the heating on long enough when it was cold that the upstairs would be heated sufficiently by the warm air rising through the house.
Only my dad couldn't afford to have the heating on that much, he kept the thermostat at 15 and woe betide anyone who tried to turn it up.
So it was cold pretty much all the time in my house. But it's surprising how warm you can get with an extra jumper or a blanket.0 -

My FIL has always kept their thermostat at 11. The boys used to open the windows open for warmth. :rotfl:Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0
