Can you connect through an ethernet cable temporarily?

I have this symptom occasionally with my laptop (not the same make) and end up having to connect through the cable. Eventually the computer recognises the connection and, when I remove the cable, it stays on.

Absolutely no idea why it happens or gets solved through doing that though.

Thanks for the replies everybody , still not sorted out fixing the wi-fi but am able to get online via the ethernet cable ( thanks very much Yorkie1) but when I take the cable out it doesnt recognise wi-fi and just loses the connection.
When I got online I re-installed the wireless drivers ( thanks espresso) but still no success.
My latest thinking is as I cannot do a system restore as it wont let me turn on this function (although I havent created a restore point :o) maybe I could do a system recovery ?
Have pressed F8 as it boots up but the list of options doesnt include "Repair my computer" .

Anybody know of any way I could get a system recovery done ?

    Thanks

I haven't got a netbook but on my laptop I have to click on the icon that looks like a computer monitor.... located in the bottom right hand corner (tray??). This lists the networks available and the network connection. Click on that icon and go to the Support Tab, and click on Repair.
No idea if this is possible on your netbook.

Thanks loanranger but isnt the same icons on my netbook.Am running out of ideas now and am thinking of giving it a really stern talking to it to see if it can see the error of its ways.

Looks like I might have to see if the local computer repair shop might be able to fix it.

    Thanks

Have just been on HUKD and saw a post for a USB wireless dongle.Never knew these existed.
Does anybody know if I could use this on my netbook as a way of bypassing my faulty wifi key ? Although I dont have a disc drive on my netbook.
If I could plug this in and pick up wifi signal it would be brilliant.
    Thanks for any help.

you could if you wished, but not as good as fixing the problem

check the device is enabled in the bios.

press Fn + F2 at the same time, and note if the wireless light comes on or not.

check device manager to see if the wireless card shows up
