Router question

Are you still getting slow speeds with the modem -> router -> pc setup?
If so, as above, what is the speed difference? And how are you measuring your speeds?
Finally, are you ex-NTL or ex-BlueYonder?0 -
Hi.
I am x ntl.
I have connected the modem > router> laptop.
Been using speedtest.net
First test i did about 5 weeks ago was download 66kb/s
Usually average now at about 600-900 kb/s
Just done another and result was Download 690 kb/s Upload 192 kb/s.
I dont think it should be that slow?? i have 2meg package.

As it is a laptop, the simplest way is to buy a new ethernet patch cable, take the laptop to the modem, connect them up and ring Virgin.
Whatever speed you are paying for, you clearly have a slow connection. If the only way to get them to accept that the fault is at their end is to remove the router from the loop, then it is quite simple to do so.0 -
Are ethernet patch cables expensive? Is it different to the new ethernet cable they have just supplied?16/06/16 £11446 30/12/16 £9661.49

It's the same as supplied, and no they are not expensive (unless you go to PCWorld and buy one from Belkin in a fancy package).
Take the supplied yellow lead to a local PC shop. If you are lucky, they will put a tester on it to confirm whether it is faulty for free, before selling you a replacement for a few pounds (certainly less than a fiver).
Final thought - did the new cable modem not come with an ethernet lead? If so, have you tried using that to connect between your modem and laptop?0 -

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/43780 62p for a 2 metre cable, a few pennies cheaper for a 50cm one.
The cable just supplied should indeed be a patch cable. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Yes i've tried with the new cable supplied.
What happens is, i look in network connections and it says, acquiring ip address. Then just gives up and says limited or no connection.16/06/16 £11446 30/12/16 £9661.49

Are you connecting it all up when the PC is switched on, or are you switching everything off at the 230v mains and then switching on in order? It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Just to make sure I have this right.....
You have installed your new cable modem. When you connect it to your router, and then your laptop to your router, you can surf OK, but the download speed is too slow.
So, in order to find out why your connection speed is too slow, you disconnect the router and connect your laptop directly to the modem (using the supplied ethernet cable).
At that point, your network card in your laptop is unable to obtain an ip address from the modem?
Despite the 'no ip address' message, have you then tried the procedure I listed above about registering?
"Then open a browser, and go to the Virgin registration page to register your new modem. The address is https://autoreg.autoregister.net
When asked, enter ntl-ct8-cj486 as the password, then enter the details that should have come with the accompanying letter (PIN etc)."
If not, give it a go and if you are able to connect to the autoreg site, you will find after powering off the modem and laptop, then powering on the modem, followed by the laptop, that all should be well.
My apologies if you have already tried this, or I have misunderstood part or all of the problem.0 -
You are correct. I can connect via the router, either wired or wireless. But when i try to connect direct to modem, unable to obtain ip address. This is the same as when i tried to connect to the STB before swithcing to modem.
I have just tried the last suggestion and "cannot find server", tried going to auto reg site anyway but did not work.
network connections says packets sent 59, packets received 0.
