I believe and old CRT telly used around 10 times the electricity as a similar LCD jobby.

The last CRT we had used less than the equivalent LCD.

A 26" LED(LCD really I know) we have uses less than a 1/3rd of a previous LCD that burnt out after only 5 years.

All those 40/60/100 Watt incandescent bulbs must've used a quite a bit and I remember my folks having an electrical bar heater on the wall in the bathroom (not over the bath!!) that had a pull string to turn it on - that must've set the meter spinning!

We also had gas fires in the lounge and kitchen/dining room - I wonder if they used more or less gas than modern central heating boilers? The gas fire in the dining room was only on during Dinner, but the one in the lounge was on all evening.

When I were ickle we had a real fire, with back boiler for water and a couple of radiators. The fire breast was in the middle of the house which used to give some warmth upstairs. In the mornings we had a 2KW radiant bar fire to huddle round in the kitchen. We often had ice on the inside of the windows in deepest winter too. hot water was from the fire, immersion heater if needed, or boil a kettle.

Luckily we did get central heating later.

We have certainly got more efficient but we do use electricity to run lots more things.

If the increases actually led to an increase in energy security or making homes more energy efficient than they currently are then it would be reasonable.

However, in true government style, money is being spent on energy sources with low efficiency & reliability such as wind-farms.

Correct, plus it's all about raising tax. You have to ask yourself, about the government's top two green energy policy advisors, Tim Yeo and John Gummer (now called Lord something or other) who both have large financial interest in windfarms etc. and make a fair bit out of green policies. Oh and did I mention SamCam's old man has substancial interests in the same sort of field?

Money out the tax payer's pocket and profits into the elite's pockets.
