Energy bill - To increase energy bills

It's not like a bunch of bankers in canary wharf will be leaving the lights on all night and laughing at 'hard working families'. It does seem sensible to make provisions to ensure that particular businesses which are prone to relocate overseas, especially those in areas with already low employment, are not incentivised to migrate elsewhere.
I'd rather look at why we are so uncompetitive compared to other countries, if it's really the case that these energy consuming big business enterprises can't pay, the same as the rest of us will.
If that's the tipping point to a massive undertaking of moving abroad, then theres something seriously wrong with the UK.
I just don't believe it is, and I can't believe business has hung on so long here if thats really the case. To be honest, i'm a little bored of hearing the boy crying wolf from these comapnies and banks everytime the politicians murmur something needs to change.
I think the real case is threats from these companies to the political parties.0 -
I can see the argument for being less reliant on foreign oil and gas. But all the "green" stuff is just a waste of money for a nation the size of the UK.0

Can anyone find a chart for utilities increase in the UK over the last decade?
Must be somewhere on the web.
We have been in our current house for 16 years (nearly new) 4 bed detached..
The first year we moved in paying quartley on receipt of bill. (£)
G 288 E360 648
2000
G 270 E400 670
2008 (unit price eq. p/kwh) G 2.4 E 9.4
G588 E971 1559
At which point switched top DDR/Online/Fixed, switched 3 times after.
2009
G516 E834 1350
2010 topped up roof insulation to min 300mm and in places 500mm (ordered more than needed from free supplier, and full cavity wall insulation, existing DG) nearly all lights energy saving (incl GU10, R63 etc) or on dimmer.
2011
G407 E662 1069
2013 Est on current 2011 averages. Unit price eq.(G4.1 (+70% on 08) E 12 (+28%)
G471 E771 1242
So in 13 years total cost up 85% on top of switching, insulating, energy saving most things and reducing usage (divide 2008 price/unit) eg. stat now runs at 19C not 22+ and for fewer hours. Insulation did appear to make the house more uni formally warm on heating and for a 2 hour run in the morning lasting until late afternoon in the winter.
We have, but very rarely use, a TD. An electric shower installed in bathroom, pre shift to cheaper tariffs, is one of the big drains 9kwh, especially with a late teenage daughter around.
A boiler switch fro D to A would make some difference but at present usage cost to change can't really be justified.

I must admit I was surprised by the hike in gas prices when I did my last post, it hadn't registered as having gone up so much.
Your link shows it nicely:(
One thing we forget is water , not shown in the figures yet. My last bill UU is up near 10%, based on £/metre."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Stick a profit graph in, and it would show the same results.
Were they not dergegulated a bit further around the time they all started increasing?0 -

Is it really to do with profit and not just the fact that we no longer have any cheap fuel? Just look at coal it has mirrored gas.
Think about the price of petrol that has gone up in much the same way and around the same time, Oil of course has also gone up in the same period.
Half the population of India have no mains electric HALF!! How long do you think that will be for? Coal is currently being mined all over Asia and Africa for industry but also for new electric installations, the whole world wants power. Just blaming the utilities and saying they are running off with the profits is a bit like blaming bankers for why so many have personal debt.
We need to realise its never going to go back to the days of £35 lecci and £40 gas dd those days are gone.
The only way I can see prices stabilising is if we use our own resources, I saw a mention of coal but that is a dirty fuel. Much cleaner is the gas under our feet.
We await the British Geological survey on Fracking but many are expecting it to show vast amounts of shale gas under our feet, this won't bring gas down but it might stabilise the price for a few decades.0 -

Have you got shares in fracking?;)
The governements are certainly help the load the tariffs with green "taxes" which don't really help.
There is certainly a good wedge of profit being made vertically by the suppliers even if the retail arms still show they are merely covering their costs.
For a £25k investment in Centrica I could probably cover my fuel bill. Share price up 14%% in last year too."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Err nope I don't have shares but I have looked into it lol
It just makes logical sense, a clean fuel plenty of it and its ours no some crafty Ruski who can turn it off whenever he likes.
For years we have been looking for fosil free solutions but we have not got very far, air/ground heat pumps use the back up of grid electric  and 9kw immersion kicking in does not do your bills any good at all lol. In fact if your not on mains gas your in trouble bill wise as LPG, oil (next cheap fuel), and off peak electric don't offer the same control at a cheap price unlike good old gas.
Look at our mates over the pond they have had cheaper gas for the past couple of years added to this they have fuel security in both oil and gas.
H
Ps, have a decent tip on a silver miner!

Err, sort of
. I have, but not for this country.
It's not a palatable truth but every method of energy generation has drawbacks. There is plenty of resistance in Canada to things like dredging, but its too important to the local economy to ignore.
Re: the nuclear power plants. It will be an interesting power play between the government and EDF/Hitachi as to who holds the better cards in the price negotiations over the new plants. My money is on the suppliers shafting a government forced into a need for action.0
