no cavity wall insulation, not much loft insulation, double glazing but old and leaky, and a family that refuse to turn off lights.

Last chance to get it for free (cavity/loft), from BG today! You don't have to be a customer either.

I am having mine done today! Had 150mm in loft but having Viscount insulation to top it up from 150mm to 300mm

As you said usage is the key its got to be going somewhere. I often find the culprits to be electric heating in conservatories and under floor electric in bathrooms and on suites. My electric usage for 2 folk is what I would class normal (11UPD), for a family I would put this up to 14-18UPD as typical. Another way of calculating usage is giving 6UPD to everyone aged 8+ .

It's harder to say on gas but as a rule metric meter 7-9UPD imperial 3-4UPD (that's units on the meter NOT KWH).

My usage (4bed detached), £94 per month. Well insulated (or soon to be :);) but inefficient 11yr old boiler boo! Wify also works from home so heating on 21-22 degrees all day. I found the digital thermostat helps (£30-£50), as more accurate and she no longer whacks it up to 25 as the old room stats used a mercury switch which often meant the temp dropped 3 degrees before kicking back in.

The Op either has this wrong or has big issues going on somewhere.
  • The cost of energy is going to increase significantly over time. The gov has committed to dramatically reduce our carbon emissions and allowing the price of fuel bills to increase will assist in achieving this.

Correct we can't continue to be as wasteful.
  • You can check a home that has been evaluated in the last 5 years (sold or rented) here:

    https://www.epcregister.com/home.html

Check with (say) Zoopla first to get post code, postal address and date of last sale.

Personally I would like google street view camera cars round again on cold winter nights (like last night) but this time using an infra red camera.

We need to frack for gas in my view.

Trillions of cubic metres of the stuff out there in Morecambe bay, and that's just one site.

If it is working for our transatlantic cousins ...

Nuclear is never going to deliver cheap energy. Build costs and investment recovery times are just too high.

Not getting it done. My house is partially rendered and I don't want drill holes all over the render.

Not to mention too many horror stories in my area regarding damp once the cavity has been bridged with insulation.

We've run out of cheap gas from the North Sea and we've now entered an era of expensive enegy - what are you proposing energy companies do? Run at a loss and let the tax payer pick up the bill that way?

We are sitting on Millions upon Millions of tonnes of Coal.

It is considered too dirty for us to use, but not apparently for the rest of the world.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

When the light start going out and people are fezing to death I am sure "we" will be glad it has been left there.

May not cheap but sustainable. Legacy costs are the real problem.

Taping shale just delays the inevitable and by the time it runs through my meter I doubt it will be cheap either. If it is safe to use it then I agree it should be tapped.

I don't want more nuclear power or fracking....The German's don't feel they need nuclear power I'm not sure why we do?

For now they don't.Their concerns are more disaster fears based, I understand.

I am sure they will happily buy supply from outside their borders, produced by nuclear.

I find the disaster concern interesting as France is a big nuclear user. With the prevailing wind blowing from the west perhaps Germany should be asking French to turn it off.

Energy efficiency is the theme for the householder...most have cavity and loft insulation...new boilers...energy lightbulbs etc etc...in an attempt to keep the bills down.
I went into a hotel last year and as I got through the reception area and up to the next level I'd counted over 60 sets of light fittings...I then gave up.
The problems all over the place and probably most of the modern world...when are we really going to give it a go.
