PAYG Vodaphone repair

I knew this was going to be difficult... I have a Vodaphone PAYG (using with a contract sim but not relevant). Bought at Tesco Direct 6 months ago. A Vodaphone s/w update yesterday has killed the phone (error message about signature invalid... tried all button combinations...). I have to take the battery out to shut it down.
- Went to Voda shop - said go to where it was purchased.
- Went to Tesco Direct - said ring Mobile Support
- Mobile Support said I need a "reset" from Voda 191 (which I cannot dial)
- Found a freephone number for Voda. Said I need to talk to manufacture (Huawei in this case) or Voda PAYG support
-Voda PAYG confirmed my SIM and IMEI(?) were all valid and said -they cannot do resets- must take it to a Voda shop
Back to square one. My guess is the retailer (Tesco) are responsible for fixing this. Any suggestions?

The retailer is ultimately responsible - but has to be the branch or department you bought if from, not any generically branded outlet.0
