Ok so trying to help out a friend, who's computer won't start seems the power was turned of during a Windows update, and now it just boots up and is stuck in a loop. Now I know about system restore which I've had to do before, however they've not got a windows cd which I could use, any suggestions? It's Windows 7. Thanks

No, surely System Restore has to be the better option here, just restore to before the Updates started & do them all over again0
 -
How are they going to do a system restore if they can't access the compute first?
Can you do it from boot without a CD?0 -
Will it start in safe mode ?0

How do you rescue data without being able to access Windows? On this thread, which is still unresolved, you implied you couldn't in post #10; does it make a difference if you can use the optical drive?or rescue data, and use the factory restore partition0 -
Don't think I implied that, I said if you don't mind wiping it.
data can be rescued by using a bootcd (on an actual cd, or on a usb stick), of which they are many, or by putting the disk into a usb caddy.
here's one http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-express/download_old.html
here's many others http://www.sarducd.it/
you've already got a working ubuntu installation installed, which should be able to rescue any data you need.
perhaps you'll get more advice if you update it to say it's unresolved, and say what you've tried!!

Tap f8 on startup, when you reach the Advanced boot options menu choose repair my computer then from the system recovery options choose system restore0
