My Asus Eee dual boots with Ubuntu, but when I select XP Home, the Windows splash screen appears as normal for a few seconds but then reverts to the dual boot choice screen. In between these events, however, it does display a blue screen with white writing on which cannot be read as it only lasts about a tenth of a second.
A clue is that this has only happened since an incident when XP was running when I cut power to the machine.
Choosing 'last known' or 'safe mode' options makes no difference.
I can't do what I want to do with Ubuntu as I need to log in as superuser to download programs, but it's been nearly a year since I used it and don't even remember selecting a password!

Ubuntu boots fine, or are you suggesting this to avoid the superuser problem?debitcardmayhem wrote: »Start your ubuntu in recovery mode,0 -
It sounds like your XP install has been corrupted due to the sudden loss of power, the simplest option if you can would be to run a repair install from the Windows XP CD.

It's a netbook, and in any case Asus didn't provide one.It sounds like your XP install has been corrupted due to the sudden loss of power, the simplest option if you can would be to run a repair install from the Windows XP CD.
BTW it's not the grassy scene that appears when XP is loading as I originally stated, it's this one0 -
I'm sure some other kind soul can provide with a link to the Asus XP Recovery disc.0

When I had this problem in the past with XP (following a power cut) "fixmbr" solved it.
clicky> fix mbr in windows xp
edit:If you don't have the install cd try MbrFix:

How about this solution, which states You can do it with Linux. Either boot a USB stick; or if Linux is already installed, you can rewrite the MBR as a "final act", which will make it inaccessible (until you reinstall Linux). I need to recover the files I had on XP but I don't mind losing Ubuntu, although please bear in mind that I've forgotten the password to be 'new user' (or even 'superuser'). It's at http://superuser.com/questions/346433/restore-windows-xp-mbr-without-windows-xp-disc0 -
If you don't mind wiping it.
Asus eepc, boot, holding F2, disable boot booster in the bios, reboot, holding F9, initiates factory restore
may not work if you have deleted the partition, or messed things up with linux.!!

I can't mount any of my folders with Ubuntu as I need to log in as superuser to download programs, but it's been nearly a year since I used it and don't even remember selecting a password! Otherwise I could shift the files off and do the factory restore you suggest. If you don't mind wiping it.
