So annoyed! Three moblie broadband advice anyone?

Hello everyone,

So I had a three moblie broadband contract for 2 years (I've hardly ever used it for the past year though as it was for my student accomodation but now I'm back living with my rents and dont need it) and ended in September this year. After reading a couple of posts about making sure to cancel it because the contract was for a minimum of 2 years I phoned up three about a month ago to cancel it.
I'm sure the guy I spoke to is actually a lovely person but he was useless! Not only was the phone reception terrible (never experienced anything like that before on a landline), the guy had a an accent which I could not understand a word of (I think he was Indian) and he didnt really seem to understand much of what I was saying. I had to ask him to repeat himself several times because I could not understand.
Anyway, I asked to cancel the contract and he said that he had cancelled it but before he said that he waffled on about a cheap Ipad (he had the cheek to laugh at how old my trusty laptop is) and also gave me a code which I could give to another person so they could take "ownership" of my mobile broadband by phoning up three and telling them the code. I made it clear to this chap that I wouldnt want the Ipad or the code (I didnt even write the code down!) So I put the phone down thinking that it had been cancelled and waited for the final bill he said he was going to send me. I thought however that I better email three to double check that it had been cancelled. In the reply they told me to phone them but I decided I was not going to go through another phone call like that again! In the end I completely forgot about this final bill thing he was suppose to be sending me.
Today however I had a couple of missed calls from three asking me to phone them so I did. The reception on the phone was better and they guy I spoke to had a clearer accent but he told me I had payments outstanding for my moblie broadband contract! I told him that I had phoned up about a month ago to cancel it and was told by the guy that I had spoken to previously that it had been cancelled. Guy no.2 told me that although there was a record of this call the cancelleation had not happened because my information could not be verified - I wasnt told this though! Have to admit I got rather angry at him (which is very rare for me - I wouldnt hurt a fly) and told him that I was not going to pay anything because I cancelled the contract about a month ago and as far as I was concerned that was that! He said however that because guy no.1 had given me this new "ownership" code the contract had not been cancelled because the contract was going be continued by the new owner but I havent given the code to anyone cos I didnt write it down in the first place!
I'm sorry I've probably rambled a bit (much easier to type quickly when I'm angry than when calmly trying to write my dissertation!) but does anyone have an advice, or has this happened to anyone else? Or can anyone advise me as how to preceed next?I dont want to have to pay for something that I thought I had cancelled but at the same time it scares me slightly to have money owing to people! Any advice would be most most welcome!!
Ta very much! XX

    Thanks for the reply!
I wasnt told when I phoned to cancel the contract the first time that I had to give 30 days notice - bit cheeky of them cos it means they will get more payment!
I've sent an email of complaint, although their complaint form didnt work so I had to send it as a query, to see what they say but I expect they will reply saying there is nothing they can do and I have to pay... useless!

It was in the contract you agreed - 30 days notice is usual (not 'a bit cheeky') and you tell them you want to depart 1 month before your minimum term expires (the contract continues unless you do this, as the term stated is your minimum period of service, NOT a finite term).

edd78 - I just got another phone call from them and the lady I spoke to this time said that because I had originally been given the new ownership code and then had not called three again to say that there was not going to be a new owner the contract was continued. If someone had called and used my ownership code the contract would have been cancelled in my name and then continued in that persons name. I think if they give you this ownership code and you have no intention of using it, just phone them again the next day to say that you still want to cancel the contract even though you were given the code. The lady said that the contract should finish on the 29th December (1 month after my second phone call) and I'll get a final bill after then. I did in fact owe them money from the period of 3rd Oct- 2 Nov so I paid that off so admittedly I cancelled the direct debit too soon! Third time lucky I've managed to cancel it this time!

Buzby - apologies for not being as forward thinking as you, I still think its a bit cheeky for them to take more money from those of us who do not cancel it before the minimum contract is up. I called to cancel the contract and information given to me was not explained properly - I think that is the main problem here.
