Not sure I agree with that, especially for a solid wall.

Firstly, the foil, card, etc, will cost pennies, most likely it's already lying around the house.

Secondly, many solid walls are good conductors, (eg. granite) and will act as a heat conduit to outside. In any case, it is pointless heating the wall, when you are trying to heat the air in the room.

Once the foil is in place, it's there forever, so the savings will add up over the years.

I've done my rads wherever possible, and you can immediately feel a noticeable increase in the heat it gives off. I used offcuts of the reflective blanket/sheeting stuff that you can line lofts with, reflective both sides with a fine layer of insulation in the middle, all about 10mm thick.
I feel a noticeable difference in my house. Its old, 2 brick thick and gets very cold. I do this and use draught brushes on doors and door curtains too. Without adding these cheap little extras I think I'd freeze  You can get lovely heavy weight cheap curtains from second hand shops and if you don't like the colour just dye them to suit your decor.

I heat my living room to 18/19C and the rest of the house to 12C. With a jumper and a fleece I can easily move between rooms without feeling cold in the slightest. As long as my feet are warm I'm fine. I've been waking up to 8C most mornings but toasty and warm with two duvets.

There is absolutely no need to waste hundreds of pounds on heating the whole place to 22C. For example, I'll happily sit around in summer in a light jumper in temps of 18C and think nothing of it, so why should winter be any different?

I feel for you but i would use the heating and worry about it later, the health of my family is worth more than a bill. You can arrange a payment schedule later and i doubt they would cut you off with 2 kids.Good luck and keep warm.

Awful advise to heat now and worry about bills later. This thought process has crippled the country, and for people who are concerned and don't want to be in fuel poverty this is not an option.
