I know if you pay a monthly fee you get unlimited net access but what does it cost on payg to access the net?

Thanks
Is it cheaper to have a contract?

Depends on what network and what plan you are on ?

If you don't have a plan that includes internet I think it's about 65p per mb so if you are going to use it you need a package that gives you a better deal with some free mb's etc
It's not just about the money
  • Also if you have an unlocked phone you will have more choices i.e.

Virgin charge 50p for UP TO 25MB internet per DAY (anything over is £2 per MB) or buy a data booster for £5 = 1 month* of up to 1GB.

T-Mobile have data boosters for 5 days = £2.50, 30 days = £5, plus one available for £20 = 6 months. They have a limit, but you just get very slowed down if you go over and not charged an arm and a leg.

Tesco Mobile have bundles at £5 for 500MB = month or £7.50 for 1GB = month

*One month usually means 30 days.

I happen to know because I have been researching this for my unlocked PAYG phone. I only want occasional use so these types of boosters/bundles are a good idea for me.
  • Of all the main networks, Orange are possibly the least attractive with PAYG data use. You can get 100MB which lasts a month with a £10 top up with one of their tariffs but extra data is expensive compared to other networks.

Last time I looked around, T-Mobile were best for me with the £20 for 6 months data deal but I don't make many calls. Giffgaff and "3" also merit a look.

I've recently started using orange on payg and find that the data plans are quite reasonable.
I normally top up by £15 per month which gives me a "free" 500mb data bundle that lasts a month and it also gives me 600 "free" texts.
As I hardly ever make any calls, well certainly not 60 minutes per month that the £15 credit will buy me, I usually spend £7.50 of my credit on an extra 500mb data bundle mid month as 500mb normally only lasts me about 2 weeks. This still leaves me with 30 minutes of calls (@25p/min)

...so essentially my £15 monthly topup gives me:

    1GB data
    600 texts
30 mins calls (or often much longer as my 3 most called numbers I get up to an hour for only 25p on "magic numbers")

Or if you already have a phone, take a look at some of the sim only deals that are around. Some of them don't have a minimum contract, some do.

Ovivo (PAYG) have free monthly bundles 100mins, 100 texts, 200mb all free each month!

So you if only need 200mb, you have free internet with a Ovivo.

If you need more internet, or more texts or calls, they have reasonably priced bundles of extra texts, calls or internet.

Or you can just pay 10p per min, 6p per text or 20p per mb, for stuff over an above the monthly allowance.

I find the free bundle more than enough.
