The only reason it's against their rules is because ebay don't get their fee. Shame for them but sales are done all the time off ebay, if i have something large to sell i will have it on gumtree and ebay if it sells on gumtree ebay don't get their fee and i cancel the listing before any 12hr deadline ect. If it sells through messaging after the auction has ended the same thing applies ebay still don't get their fee.
They can't force someone to sell or relist on ebay if they get an offer elsewhere.
can you tell i'm in a grumpy mood with ebay today

It happens all the time around this time of year for xmas presants ect because they dont want there partner knowing. I would get them to pay by gift option just to be safer

It's only against their rules if the listing is active.
The gift payment option makes you look dodgy, so don't use that.0 -

Actually I think I would just accept the PayPal payment. If you relist then you have to wait for auction to end again and time might be of the essence here.
Many people who ask about buying afterwards never actually get round to bothering, so raise a PayPal invoice, if he pays all well and good. If he doesn't then you have lost nothing and can just relist at your own convenience.
i've had a few ask after listing has ended and all have paid. as mentioned no harm in sending an invoice, you have nothing to lose. I tend to answer straight away...while they are still interested and send the invoice straight away. most of the time they pay within half an hour.0 -
OP it is also possible that they kept it on a wish list rather than watched list or maybe they looked through completed litings. It doesn't have to be dodgy. The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. Steve Biko0

Thank you all for the helpful replies. I got in touch with him and he is still keen to buy. He said I didn't need to invoice him just give him my email address and he will pay. Does this mean it will be a gift payment?
Hubby says thanks again because it was his stuff I was selling so he is getting the money.

No he can still pay for goods and have full coverage it just saves you raising an invoice.
However, just double check any payments to make sure they show in your PayPal account .I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I've only ever had one person approach me, offering to buy something on a listing that had just ended.
I was a very new seller at the time, with 1 feedback, and he messaged 10 minutes after the auction ended, asking for my email address so he could send the paypal payment.
As I was so new, I was convinced I was being targeted for some sort of scam, so I declined and said I'd relist.
He never did buy it after the relist, and I'm still sure he wanted my email address for some dodgy reason!Early retired - 18th December 2014
