NET MIGRATION - Are we finally coming to terms with this problem?

Todays welcome news is that Net Migration to the UK has at last fallen by a quarter, even though the initial start was not what the Government wished for..
The Conservatives made reducing net migration a key part of their immigration policy while in opposition although totals actually rose by more than 20% in 2010-11.
Is it far too early to celebrate?

The figures are a joke as they don't actually know how many are in the country.0

As you say they don't really know.
From Europe I would be surprised if it were down. From outside the EU, they probably do have more of an idea but at best holding the line."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

?
net is offsetting one against the other. How do you get a net figure from a singular?0 -
According to the BBC website the drop is mainly due to a reduction in the numbers of foreign students. Since the genuine ones would mainly go home on completion of their course it perhaps isnt such a great achievement. It seems to be more a matter of the government sacrificing the short term financial and the long term global political interests of the country to get approval from the tabloids.0

I don't see how the long terms interests of the country are served by continuing to overcrowd it.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

Somebody will be along shortly to disagree with your common sense.0 -

Surely thats is good? the country is not full of overseas ex students, lacking in skills with poor qualifications?
meaning our residents, lacking in skills and with poor qualifications can no longer moan about 'those bloody foreigners taking our jobs'?0 -

It is not the ex students that really take the lions share of jobs though is it. It is rafts of even poorer qualified willing to work for a relative pittance.
I thought overseas students came here because of our excellent universities so why do they finish with poor qualifications and no skills? Perhaps it is a reflection of a bigger problem in our university system?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
