Please Help - Coming To The End Of The Road ....

I really hope that I can get some advice as I feel as though I am at the end of the road with these things .....

Apologies for it being a long one but best to tell everything ....

I am a War Veteran that lost everything when I got PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) from being at Gulf War 1 and a few other places.

I was married at a young age (19) in 1990 and I believed that I should provide for my wife and hence took out loans and credit cards etc etc and ended up taking out more credit to pay for my wifes needs.

I was paying bits and pieces off from mid 90's until I had to leave the Army in 2001 and then I made payments here and there ... I was so ill that I did leave it and just got all the letters, I did try to speak to the collections people on a number of occasions and got abuse down the phone even though I was ill.

At the moment I am not sure if I have £32,000 of debt of £40,000 because some of the collections people will not tell me what the debt is for or how much it is.

All my creditors have been written to and hardly anyone replies and when you speak to them they just say "when are you paying"

I have made massive efforts to write to them with an Income/Expenditure and Medical supporting letters about my illness etc etc and they do not even respond ...

How can you do anything when you dont get responses, how can you tackle your debts if you get no help from these people?

I have managed to get write offs from 3 creditors out of a total of 10 creditors totalling over £16,000 when CAB said it couldnt be done ... I am not sure how longer my illness can take the stress and abuse that I get when I ring these people or the fact that the law does not favour those that try and communicate with these people.

I think I have 2 CCJ's but I am not sure? can I have these removed due to the fact that I was in communication with the companies?

How do I make a company reply to me? Do I go for more write offs or BR?

All my debts are High street banks and a store card and I have had no new debt since 2000 .... I have no credit cards or store cards or loans ... my current account has not been overdrawn since 2001 and I have taken no further credit out ...

I am getting very tired now and losing the will to live after all the efforts I have made ...

    Ok, first things first.....

There are ways out of this and there will be plenty of people who can come and give you some really practical advice having "been there, done that".

In the meantime, go and put the kettle on, make a cup of coffee and start writing down everything you can think of that is money related. At this stage don't worry if you don't have all the answers - they will come.

You can get a free credit check on line which will give you a good idea of what the actual debt outstanding is and whether there are CCJs etc. These can be done on https://www.creditexpert.com

Also, speak to either the CAB or the CCCS (phone numbers at the top of this board) and they will give you some really good advice.

    Good luck and keep posting.

It sounds like you've had a hell of a time, and creditors can be right @rses!

You could send them a letter (recorded delivery) asking them to provide you with a copy of the original signed credit agreement and a statement of amount currently outstanding. Give them 30 days to send this information to you - there are template letters somewhere which I'm hoping someone will pop up for you, but they include references to your rights to get this information from them.

In the meantime, I would suggest using the budget planner spreadsheet on the toolbar at the top of the board to work out your monthly income & expenditure. If you want to then pop up a SoA, we'll be able to see where savings could possibly be made. For now, I would do that without any debt repayments, list them separately when you get the figures, as you can then work out a pro-rata amount to send them each month.

If you're worried about not paying them anything, send them £1 token payment each stating that you are willing to pay, but need to arrange your finances.

    Good luck!

Thank you .. its very hard for a proud person to be open about things and even more so when you have done so much to try and sort things out ... these people grind you down.

I have got a form from CCCS for my credit report so I will send that off today ...

Its to the point where I cannot tell what each debt is as its just a figure from a collection company.

CAB gave up after 8 hours (the time you are allocated) because creditors were not replying ..

I have written to my creditors and sent by recorded delivery and they still do not reply ...

The next thing I was going to do was to ask for the original credit agreement but they do not reply when you ask them for anything even when you send it recorded ...

Offered them a £1 token payment and none of them responded hence you go round in circles and give up :(

Sorry to hear about all your troubles. Dealing with creditors can be a nightmare, I've come to the conclusion most of them don't reply to letters so forcing you to call them on their expensive 0870 numbers.

I would sign up with CCCS asap they will distrubute the token payments and send your budget to them. They've been great with me and OH and get responses from creditors most of the time as they are well respected in the credit industry. Best of all it's free too :)

Good luck and keep posting :)

Give it some time, I remember it did take a few months for all my creditors to acknowledge this is what we were doing, as long as you keep making regular payments even if they are token ones it shows them you want to sort things out. I know it seems like forever but it will happen, hang in there! :)

Forgot to add sometimes creditors contact CCCS directly and don't bother writing to you, so keep in contact with CCCS too.
