The bedspread sounds perfect, as long as he doesn't find it uncomfortable. Once you've got something over the waterproof bit it helps muffle the noise and stops it being slippery and sweaty. Before I could afford quilted protectors I used towels, blankets, old duvets etc. Personally I don't find the waterproof terry covers much of an improvement over the plain plastic ones - they're still sweaty and they still make a noise.

I remember when we were kids we always had old woollen blankets under our sheets, back in the day before matress protectors were common place.

  • Merititen, thank you so much for your second post, apology accepted and i return mine back as i was tetchy. Unsuprising given my recent events. I hope you feel well again soon.

Lots to consider, I never even thought about NOT getting another waterproof one, I guess a usual mattress protector would do the job against sick?

I have tried to think back on what I had as a child, but I dont remember anything on the bed other than a nylon fitted sheet. Clearly I can't remember my toddler years.

Depends on the quantity produced LOL. DS2 will usually soak through the quilted protector to the waterproof if he hurls.

I have a thick matress protector on the boy's beds. They havent wee'd the bed for years but if they do throw up the padding soaks it up and it doesn't go through to the matress.
If you do want to keep the security of a plastic sheet put a brushed cotton sheet on top, underneath his fitted sheet if you know what I mean. He wont be sweaty then.

I didnt mean it as a judgement - sorry! I am not feeling very well and perhaps posted without thinking! I do apologise.

When certain grandkids sleep over then I put a 'damp proof course' over the memory foam mattress, because of course I do not want it Peed on! The twins are 8 but they still have 'accidents' (one is ADHD and if she pees the bed her twin does too!).
at six some kids are really reliable - but, you cannot really rule out illness, my ten yr old grandson was mortified when he had a tummy bug and soiled the bed. luckily I had the DPC on!
I think if a child has been really reliable for a year or more then perhaps a mattress protector? The rubber and plastic ones are really horrible to sleep on - They were still using them last time I was in hospital and having a 'night sweat' was not a pleasant experience.

Sorry - Please don't take offence, but it is something that drives me mad. Your granddaughter "isn't" ADHD, she may have ADHD but that doesn't define her.

I have two of those Argos waterproof protectors for using on my 3 year olds bed and they're great. Not plasticky or noisy and they don't make him hot.

lolly - I am perfectly aware my GD has ADHD - the term 'is' tho is commonly used that she 'is ADHD/possibly Aspergers' in her psych reports and it just came out that way! its been going on so long without any further testing that I tend to think 'is ADHD'. Thank you for bringing it to my attention - I do see her as a child with ADHD honestly!!!!!!!!!! and a rather special and unique child!
