Can I insert SIM card into a new phone?

Options
Hi All

I currently have a Nokia 6300 handset on contract with T Mobile. I've had this phone for 5 years now. Lately, I've been having difficulties charging up the phone because the connector pin on the end of the charger lead no longer fits snugly into the connection point at the bottom of the phone. A couple of years ago I negotiated a fantastic monthly line rental rate with T Mobile so I don't want to lose that discount which would happen if I ask them to send me a new phone as this would be a new contract (I have spoken to them about this). My contract includes unlimited free calls to landlines 24/7, 300 free text messages a month & 30 minutes to any mobile.

Can I buy a phone from say Argos, etc. and insert my current SIM card into the new phone and continue paying my low monthly rental to T Mobile? I don't know if that would work so your advice would be much appreciated. I don't need the latest "all singing all dancing" mobile phone - I'm happy with the handset I have apart from the issue of charging it up.

Regards.
Rosemarie

Yes as long as you but a PAYG phone on T-Mobile.

Because of the merger with Orange some Orange branded ones may work, as may some virtual operators (like Virgin Mobile) but for simplicity buy a T-Mobile one.
  • Alternatively, you can also buy an unlocked or SIM free handset, and it will work as well. Amazon is usually a pretty good bet for one off handset purchases FYI.

Will that work with any SIM free handset (apart from an Iphone which I think has a different size SIM)? I have been thinking of doing this as I don't like my current phone much. However I don't want to spend the money and then find that my current SIM from Virgin doesn't fit the new phone.

May worth checking current sim-free contracts or PAYG bundles.

What was a good deal a few years ago is often no longer a good deal now. You have a very low number of mobile minutes and no data.

You can get free monthly bundles from Ovivo (100 minutes (mobile or landline), 100 texts, and 200 mb data), and if you want more minutes or more texts, you can get additional bundles for £5.
  • An update for anyone who may have experienced a similar problem. As I like the Nokia 6300 handset I decided to take it into a phone shop on my local high street. The sales agent said that he could change the port at the bottom of the phone for £10 so that's what I did. However, it still wasn't charging properly and when he checked it he discovered that the wires had become disconnected (as I'd been bending it around for some time) so he inserted one of his chargers into my phone and it worked so I bought a new charger as well and all is working perfectly. :)
