UK mobile to UK mobile in France?

I will need to contact a friend in France on their UK mobile (not sure on provider) whilst phoning them from my UK mobile (O2) also in France at the same time.

Is this going to cost a packet? I thought calling home from France was expensive, as is the case with calling people from the UK to a UK mobile in France, so this particular scenario MUST presumably be very expensive?

This seems a little too complicated for my pea brain to work out.

a) is it expensive or is being overseas a red herring (i.e. I am just charged for standard UK mobile to UK mobile rate)????
b) is there are cheaper option (e.g. a cheap call card using a phone box?).

I assume b) will still be expensive though as I'll be phoning a UK mobile from France? This is too confusing? Any help would be much appreciated.

My son is going to France next week and taking his mobile with him. I contacted our provider and they have given him 1 month free roaming (after that it is a charged for service). I was told that each text would cost 40p. I was told he would be charged 70ppm for voice calls from his mobile while he's in France PLUS the recipient (ie me!) would also be charged 60ppm!!! So, we both get charged

That's as much as I know on the subject.

Yes it will cost a packet !!

But if you phone O2 & get a service called "My Europe 2", it will cost you £5, but all calls to your mobile while you are in Europe will be FOC - so it will be totally free if your mate calls you all the time lol

It also gives you reduced rates when calling/texting from abroad

It's actually called My Europe Extra and costs £10 a month (£5 is on business contracts paid for the whole year)

It also applies to O2 payg, so if the friend is not on O2 or Vodafone Passport, it could be worth getting a payg SIM

And you could exploit the free incoming calls and use a callback service to get outgoing cheaper than the 25p
  • I'm going to Amsterdam for 2 days next month (or possibly Athens instead if LFC get there!) I have an unlocked phone on Virgin contract my costs would be 60p min outgoing calls, 30p to receive calls and 35p texts.

Is there anything cheaper than this for a short stay?

Also if a friend back home wanted to call me while I'm away I know I get charged but do they just pay their normal rate?

You might get a Dutch SIM from Lebara, IDT Mobile or Ortel Mobile, all of which have 11 or 12 cents a minute to UK landlines.

But I wonder if it is worth it for such a short time.

If you could get by on just sms if they were cheaper, then look at smsbug mobisms vgsmail and vyke, which cost 2 to 5 cents a message, and send over wap/gprs using about a penny worth of data.
