Cold house

We have oil heating. The house was built in 95. There's a fireplace with no dampener so I have place an old mirror in front of it when not in use. I've got thermal lining and curtains on all windows. I've put draught strips on all windows. The house is still cold unless we have the heating on for hours at a time. It also has cavity wall and loft insulation. I have covered all extractors with plastic sheeting as well as the loft hatch. I have draught excluder pillows on doors. When the heating has been on the radiators seem to get cold extremely quickly(probably within 20mins). Does this sound normal? Are there any other things I can do to try and make the house warmer? The boiler has been serviced in the past month. Many thanks

Do all the radiators heat up from bottom to top when the heating is on?
Where is the room thermostat, and what temperature is it set at?
Where is the dial on the boiler set to?There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't!

What is the actual room temperature?
Some people are very sensitive to old, others to heat. Without an actual figure, it's very hard to say.0 -
Not entirely helpful but...Get an electric blanket and spend all your time in bed!0

You have answered your own question in that if you want to be warm you must run the heating system.
It is commendable to exclude drafts but always ensure you have controlled ventilation e.g.trickle vents or your going to run into damp/mould problems especially as you are not heating your house adequately. That's how our house used to be prior to retro fitting trickle vents and installing a new heating system keeping the house warm 24/7.0 -
The beatings set to 22deg. It's on from 5am-7am then 4.30 until approx 9pm.
I tend to keep the thermostat at 22. I'm not sure what the actual temp of the room is. The thermostat is in the hallway. It's a big hall with a single panel radiator (that's quite small). The dial on the radiator is set to ll. the radiators seem to heat top to bottom and the bottom cools down quicker when turned off than the top.
Having the trickle vents seems to let a lot of cold in so I've closed them but I'll regularly open them as I don't want to cause damp.
Does anyone know if you can fit thermostatic valves to radiators yourself or would a plumber have to do it? That way I could turn off in rooms we don't use. I also wonder if the radiators aren't big enough for the room and the upstairs landing doesn't have a radiator so perhaps we should have one fitted.

What size is the house? How many bedrooms?
Try turning the boiler thermostat up higher, and set the hall stat to 21.
Make sure all the radiators have no air trapped. There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't!
