Logs - Bags/Van Load Capacity/Cost

I always buy a flatbed transit load of mixed hard/soft seasoned split logs. It's usually a level load and, like every year, it goes up £5 and cost £105 this year.

My local agricultural farm merchant sells builders bags at £36.95 each and looking at various sites (see link) it's reckoned that a 1.0m3 bag would contain an average of 0.6m3 of split logs.

Does anyone know how much a standard flatbed transit level load would be?

The seller reckons his load is approx 3&1/2 builders bags = 3.5 x 0.6m3 = 2.1m3 which would cost 3.5 x £36.95 = £129.

I'm £24 better off if this assumption is right. Even if the van load was 3 bags I'd still be £6 better off. (3 x £36.95 = £111)

I'd be interested if anyone has any views on whether the calculations are about right.

The simple answer would be to buy bags as I know how much my wood store holds with a van load but I have never bought bags so haven't been able to do a physical comparison.

Thanks

  • Who knows the answer to this..........
Very open to abuse this selling by the Van / Truck / Pick Up / Large Bag / Small Bag etc etc.
Unless its sold by weight you will never know.

Go and watch him load it?

My wood supplier actively demonstrated how many bags empty out onto his truck (without me even asking).

He gave me a full tour of what he does, how he stores stuff, How he knows where each batch of wood came from, etc.

Selling by weight is open to abuse too.

If the wood is soaking wet through you are paying for a lot of water that is no use to you either.
  • Yes fair comment.....also depends on the wood softwood, hardwood etc.
Suppose you just have to look at the load, look at the wood & ask yourself if the price is what you want to pay.

    Thanks... :)

...... but I either way I saving a fortune compared to their prices!!

I know it's kiln dried but the equivalent of two 1.0m3 bags @ 0.6m3 filled = 1.2m3 = £74 from my local agricultural merchant compared to

    1.2m³ Loose Fill £175.05:eek:
