Reconnect Gas cooker Hose?

Question on behalf of a friend.

She had a Gas safety check today and they have told her the cooker is dangerous!

The reason being... the door of the oven part does not stay shut properly due to the spring hinge failing and she uses a magnet to keep the door shut and has done for the last few years without issue.

The Gas bloke said new laws had come in and because of this he had to turn her Gas off ( put a stopper on the connection )

New part has been ordered for the Cooker to fix said problem but she's worried about the connection fee of £80 or so.

Does she have to get a Gas safe engineer in or could she re connect it herself ( same hose/cooker )

It is a simple job , but by law needs to be done by a qualified gasman. Neighbours or friends might know of one who could do her a favour for a small sum....

With all services it is better to be safe than sorry

  • two things, first it would be classed as AR not ID & therefore it didn't need disconnecting just the customer being told not to use it, second if he has deemed it ID then he would have either capped off the supply to the cooker or put a sealing disc (if the cooker was the only gas appliance) in the meter both of these will req a RGI they are not a diy job.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

or if he just undid the bayonet fitting on the end of the hose just reconnect it again once the work has been done. That doesn't need an RGI.

Just noticed you used the expressioin "put a stopper on the connection". What does that mean? Does that mean as SCRGI said in post above ie capped off the supply or is it something else?

    Cheers

This what i thought as well but he just capped it off and explaining he had to blah blah blah.

The Cooker was the only Gas supply he turned of, heating is still ok etc.

Yes, he just undone the connection at the back of the Cooker and put a stopper/whatever you call it on the supply pipe in the wall to the Cooker only.

Cooker hose is just dangling awaiting re insertion.

Thats not capping it off. If he stuck one of these in:

thats just putting a "belt and braces" blank into the bayonet fitting.

I'm probably using the wrong terminology sorry.

Yes it looks like that from what i remember with loads of gunk/grease on it, looks easy enough to take out though.

On the basis that Gas Safety is too important to be done by the unqualified its really irritating when the qualified engineer abuses their position to make the customer pay through the nose for things that do not need doing. Yet some are unscupulous enough to hide behind the regulations and turn some kind of advisory notice (relating to a recent change in regulation that is not required for existing installations) into work that needs to be done.

Does the report state that it is an advisory notice that its not up to the latest regulations? Or does it say explicitly that the installation in unsafe?
