I have a black Labrador 11 months in age, at the moment weighing 32kg. My problem is he is a bed chewer got through load of blankets, quilts, sheets, vet bed, towels etc. Need something very strong i found one called the really tough tuffie dog bed, looks like a giant rubber doughnut. I just do not think its going to be large enough for him, still some growing to go and priced at £159 but has a money back guarantee. Has anybody heard or used these or no of any really strong beds.Thanks.

Can you not redirect the behaviour, give him appropriate things to chew e.g. rawhide/chew toys/chews?

    or use a kong?

It sounds like any bed you get will be destroyed, no matter what the cost is. If he has a 'release' for his chewing, remember he does NEED to chew, then he won't need to chew his bed anymore?
  • No advise but will be keeping a eye on this post. My 2boys are extreme bed chewers, they can not resist ripping a bed to shreds even with lots of chewy toys. The last bed I went out for a hour, came back to a foam pit! Looked and felt very strong http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_beds_baskets/waterproof_beds/191295

He has kongs and nylabone but just seems to prefer to chew and rip his beds. He does this between 10pm and 4.30am his toys are next to his bed so just do not no what to do. I'm more worried in case he eats some of the bedding and is ill from it.
  • Mine have never been bed destroyers (apart from that one time with an Argos cheapie thing :o).

The best beds I have found for wear and tear are from the Lucky Pet stand at the Great Yorkshire Show a couple of years ago. They are rectangular and covered in something like Cordura or ballistic nylon (like Kevlar) and come in a variety of sizes. No need to put through the washing machine as they're not absorbent and just need an occasional wipe over.

Their website is a bit pants, but there is a contact email. They might be able to answer any questions you have.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

I know it might seem a bit cruel / uncomfortable....but why don't you try one of the hard plastic beds with no bedding in for now until he "hopefully" grows out of it?

I went for this with my shepherd. Worked a treat! and he got the chewing urges satisfied by nibbling the sides. Sometimes I think we give them more comfort than they actually need!

I thought people might think I was being a bit mean suggesting without putting any bedding in it!! My dog doesn't chew her bed but that's what I would get if she did!

Mine has a soft bed in her crate for night time but happily goes and lies in there in the day on the hard plastic bottom of the tray so I think you are probably right about us giving them more comfort than they need!! ;) :rotfl:

ps. Waaaaay cheaper than £159 too!?!?

I saw these being requested on a dog rescue website - they aren't particularly cheap, but it's free to have a look - they might be suitable for your needs.
  • Our Choccy lab was a nightmare for suckling his bedding, he would quite often end up passing lumps of towel/bedding days later.

Both he and our dalmatian now have beds by "The original Hi-k9". They are no longer chewing them and seem to really like them.
