new build monopoly?

Hi,

I have just moved into a new build and the electricity is supplied on-site. The builders have an agreement with a particular electricity company to supply all electricity to the complex. I believe this specific electricity company maintain the on-site electricity supply. I am not too happy with what they are charging, but I do not see how I can change suppliers since they run the whole complex and the eletricity hub within the complex. Any advice would be much appreciated as I am really concerned at the cost.

Thank you!

We need to know more about this 'deal' - Do you have your own Elec meter, or are you billed by the management of this complex for what they consider to be your share of power supplied to the site through their meter ?

So far as I am aware, none of the licensed Elec Distribution Co's will get involved in maintaining the wiring on a site - Their responsibilty comes to full stop once the power has passed thro' the meter.

An afterthought - This "particular Energy Co" isn't Spark by any chance

i think you are confusing suppliers and dno. Unless the site is an independant dno site. Who is your supplier? If your unhappy change your supplier.

As I understood it, the OP lives in a complex (apartment block?) where all the power is supplied by one supplier.

This does happen with some new developments.

If I am correct, then OP cannot switch supplier.
  • thank you for your replies. I do have a meter in the flat and the company in question is Eon.

Ok - From your second post it seems that you have your own meter and are billed directly by Eon

So far as the builders agreement with Eon is is concerned, they have to make an agreement with one of the suppliers simply to get the power on to each flat they have built

However if there is some strange clause that implies that you are stuck with Eon, it's worthless - You with your own individual meters and the registered payee responsible for the Gas/Elec consumed by by your flat, are free to Switch to any supplier of your choice.
  • thats been standard procedure now for all new builds for years and years. builders and developers get a back hander and supply to the highest bidders. The bigger new estates share it out amongst 2 or 3 suppliers. New occupiers are free to stay the usual 4- 6 week and move like many do. But the majority seem to stay with the same suppliers, so say, an EON estate will remain that way as majority supplier
  • OK, thank you for your replies. I will investigate further!
  • Best of luck Barcelona 247, I think I read my first one supplier estate at least 12 years ago. all builders and developers work like this. I would love to know the ins and outs of how much the back hander is to the winning supplier. dont waste your breath on OFGEM, you wont get a reply

So why do you "not see how [you] can change suppliers"? Have you tried?

What makes you think a monopoly exists as per your thread title?
