Hi all,

I can't seem to connect my wireless Samsung laptop (Windows 7) to my Deskjet 710c printer. It recognises the printer, but won't print and says it is not connected.

On doing some investigation via Google, apparently the Deskjet uses a parallel interface cable to connect to a p.c. and this is not compatible with my laptop and I need an adaptor? If I go onto ebay and purchase a parallel printer adaptor cable, do you think this will solve the problem?

I've also read that the adaptors often don't work!

Thanks for any advice.

as you have it in front of you, and I don't

is there a lead connected between the laptop and the printer, or not?

if there is, then you dont need to buy a lead

OK, it actually stated "printer offline". I've just tried to re-install it (with USB cable connected between printer and laptop) ... Windows seemed to detect it this time and said "printer ready". I tried to print a couple of things and they just went into the queue. I then got the following message :-

"Windows cannot connect to printer. The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine."

I tried re-starting the machine and it didn't work. No idea what a spooler is ...

Just to add ... there's now an exclamation mark against the printer device diagram and "Needs troubleshooting".

I found the spooler device listed, re-started it, but it's made no difference.

    1,000 Posts Combo Breaker
Click start then run, type services.msc then click OK

When the list shows, scroll down to print spooler to see if it is started and the start up type is set to automatic

If it is not running, left click print spooler to highlight it, then right click, click properties and make the changes there, then click apply, start the service

You could also go to devices and printers, right click the printer, click see what's printing, click printer in the new box to check use printer offline is not ticked.

Thanks but, as above, I've already re-started the spooler and it was set to Automatic in the first place.

Just found someone with the same problem as me through google ... thread here :-

Can someone please let me know if it's worthwhile continuing to put this right, or if I should give up.

Thanks for all the help so far.

does your printer have a usb connector or a centronics, you keep referencing the latter, which can only confuse things if you are using a usb-usb lead

    Sorry closed - no idea what you mean by a centronics;

Found another interesting thread that explains certain HP printers (including mine) won't work in Windows 7 62 bit without a "patch" because of the drivers causing the spooler to crash (which is what seems to be happening). I'm yet to find out if mine is 62 bit, but it would appear to quite probably explain what the problem is.

    Thread is here :- http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Software/Deskjet-710-720-810-820-1000-Series-printers-Patch-for-64-bit/td-p/203377

I'm not at all confident about following their installation instructions though ...

Thats an oldish printer. By centronics, means parallel which I do believe that this printer is (longish 36 pin connector)
