No. You move the licence with you. Do it on the webby or make a phone call. How is that unfair? OP loses absolutely nothing. Edit: See post 10 and its also exactly what I did with my Dad's licence when he downsized last year - even though he gets it for free as an aged pensioner.

    Cheers

You are assuming that OP needs a TV licence wherever he is moving to. If he doesn't then he is losing out. This is unfair. Perhaps TV licensing are making the same assumption, which will obviously not be correct in all cases. Perhaps, as you seem so keen to defend them, you can explain why it wouldn't be reasonable not to charge people for something if they don't need it?

You seem to be assuming OP doesn't which you don't know so are you just arguing for the sake of it? You started off saying this is a ripoff (silly emotive language) now its just unfair apparently? Well sorry but life is unfair in a lot of ways. What is unfair about the TVL is that if you pay for an annual licence on the 31st August its only valid until the next 31st July but thats the way it is but I don't hear you going on about that. Its unfair the way that HMCS treat self employed people for tax in a lot of ways but they make up for it in others.

I'm not defending TVL as you seem to think but the way it is is the way it is and no amount of gum flapping on here is going to change that.

Oh and BTW there is no such thing as a Small Claims Court. Its a process (track) in the County Court.

    Cheers

  • No I do not need a TV in my new place. Watching TV was more Harm to my time and health than benefit.

In which case I stick by what I said earlier that it seems unfair
but is in their terms and conditions so I doubt there's anything you can do.

Keystone, I'd prefer to call it "discussion" rather than "arguing" (though arguing is fine as long as it doesn't imply an emotive spin)... I thought that was what this forum was for! You are correct that I was also making an assumption - this was based on the logic that OP wouldn't have posted the thread if they simply wanted to transfer the licence.

Ripoff/unfair - I used the terms interchangeably here - sorry if that caused any confusion. I still stand by both descriptions.

Re: the August-July issue - that's not what the thread was about? But I also think this is unfair if true.

Re: Self employed people and tax - sorry I'm not sure how this is relevant?

"the way it is is the way it is" - maybe so, but that doesn't mean it is fair, nor does it mean we shouldn't discuss the issue (or flap gums about it, whichever ;)).

"there is no such thing as a Small Claims Court. Its a process (track) in the County Court." I stand corrected, thanks for pointing that out.

Well they've got to find some way of paying George Entwistle £455000 for 53 days work together with nearly a million quid in pension contributions, haven't they.....

The real issue of unfairness here for me is that in reality the OP has already admitted that the TV gets in there way so presumably (OK might be a rash assumption) don't use one at the moment. If it had been me I would have cancelled the DD in October in those circumstances before the new quarter started and before I moved in November (again. presumably, knowing that I would be moving). The question would not then have arisen in the first place. Granted it may be that they forgot or didn't think to do it but that doesn't make the TVL terms essentially unfair.

Yes I agree that the question of TVL expiry isn't real germane to this thread nor is certain unfair (IMHO) treatment of the self employed by HMRC. That was just to illustrate that not everything is fair on the face of the good earth and utopia isn't always achievable.

Actually its a bit of a pity that OP didn't divvy up the information they added to the end of Post No 1 in the outset instead of 24 hours later. I suspect the discussion would have developed differently but thats the case with a lot of threads where essential information is left out in seeking opinions.

    Cheers
