  • Hi there

A couple of years ago I bought my children an asus netbook for christmas. I have to say I did regret choosing netbooks.

You can't watch dvds and the keyboard it too small to be useful really.

We are buying them tablets this year for christmas - better for portability. And then will buy a laptop to share for writing etc.

HTH? If not, the asus netbooks were good spec.

Not to sound awfuful, but if you thought notebooks were bad because of not being able to watch dvd and small keyboard, then tablets are to disapoint you even more.

Anyway back to op, i know you say cheap, but it would help to know a price range.

As for word, can download alternatives that are free and compatible with word, the one i use is libreoffice.

The reasons I am buying tablets this year are different to the reasons I bought netbooks 2 years ago. I want them for different things and am buying a full size laptop for other stuff.

imho if you can get a decent spec refurbed laptop for the same price as a netbook, you should go for the laptop.

For the price range of 130 - 170, you would be looking at a used / refurbished netbook.

Be looking more towards the £180 minimum for new. Can get refurbished laptops for around the £150 - £200, only thing with them is they rend to come with short warranties (90 days to 6 months) And charge about £10 delivery.

So if netbook, then argos do the asus x101ch which is priced at £180, which is good for the money.

Hopefully someone will know a reliable refurbished site for laptops ( i have never used one)

Big Pockets often have decent second hand business laptops at popular prices (they like 'em).
I had a Dell off them some years ago which is still doing sterling work in the family.

It's fortunate that you aren't in the US, then!

  • I don't know if the newer Asus notebooks are considerably better but the R101 has fairly poor sound. Even with headphones it's quite poor. Listening to music or watching a film on isn't a good experience. Reading forums, playing some flash games and chatting on msn or similar things it's fine for though. It starts up very quickly the battery seems to go for about 3 or 4 of browsing youtube and playing flash games. But if listening to music is a main reason for purchase then stay clear of it. A reconditioned laptop would probably be better.

I don't really know if this helps.
