Can't get sky @ new house-alternatives?

Hi I've just had the sky engineers out at my new house to install sky and thanks to a big tree (not on my property!) they are unable to get a signal! To say I'm devastated is an understatement. I know its not the end of the world but I really loved having sky at our old house we had whole package including sport, movies anytime plus, multiroom etc as well as phone and broadband so is there an alternative company who could offer the same services without the use of a sky dish? I'm just so annoyed as I didn't foresee there being a problem at the new house. If anyone has got any advice it would be welcome. Thanks.

A chain saw, Virgin Cable or YouView. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Chain saw not an option but thank you for making me smile!
The sky engineer tested the signal and he doesn't think its wired for virgin either
What is you view?0 -
Freeview with goodies.
You can buy the box outright or as part of a deal with Talk Talk or BT Broadband.

Try your local independent installer via the CAI website, they can install where sky cannot, worth a try.0

If no cable or satellite, then Freeview is the only option.
The property may not be wired for VM, but that doesn't mean that VM isn't available in your street. Check on the VM site.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Here's a long-shot, but you never know - ask your neighbour to cut their tree back (known as pollarding).
We asked our back garden neighbour to look at doing so, as their three trees cut out our sunlight. And, in fairness to them, they got a quote for doing so. But on getting the quote, they nearly had an heart attack when they saw the price, and so said no, but at least they considered it.0 -
Can't they or another contractor put it somewhere it can 'see' past the tree?
Surely the Sky guys didn't just try it one place then give up?0 -
You really need to check Virgin Media availability for yourself. I wouldn't take the word of someone from Sky!0

I was reading the satcure co uk blog 171.
What about running a cable from a neighbours working satellite dish.
It may require the LNB on the dish to be changed for one with multiple outputs, but it's worth thinking about?
Sky's own contractors seem to want only easy jobs, it may well be possible to have your own satellite dish.0
