Transferring pictures to DVD?

Options
I am trying to back up my 2.7GB of pics and mini videos to DVD but every time I try I get an error message saying "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this folder. What do you want to do"? "retry" "Skip" "Cancel" I have tried skipping etc. but to no avail.

Any ideas ?

Donnie the OP is using the built in cd writing software with windows and it is crap.

It is very nice to just be able to select add to cd/dvd but it rarely works and constantly pesters you if you are partway through a compilation. The best advice is to get some proper software for burning CD's and DVD's like nero it is miles better and you have a lot more control over the disk production.

"cd writing software". Does it work with DVD?

Anyway, you're right. When they come back to the thread, we'll try to help.

    Hi All,

I agree with this, using Nero is a lot better too! Also with Nero if you keep all your photos in one directory on your PC, when you have added more pics and added those into the same directory, Nero can work out what the differences/additions are and add these to the archive on CD/DVD when you put the disc in with Nero running.

That said I got a DVD writer on this PC last May and I've still to actually write onto DVD as I still have about 100 spare blank CDs!

    Cheers

CD and DVD writing software is the same, you just select whihc type of disk you are writeing to so it knows how much you can put on it and away it goes.

As for useing a DVD writer I only ever use the cd side of things for audio disks now evrything else is on DVD they take up less space.

I haven't tried using the Microsoft utility for writing to DVD. Partially, because it's mooted as a CD writing utility.
    May test it later.

Apologies for my tardiness in responding.

I am trying to use Windows to transfer. Last year I used it without problem to back-up a couple of gigs of pics and stuff but it won't work now.

Thanks for the advice, I will try Nero and report back.

I installed Nero and went through the whole process of transferring all the pics to Nero then when it tried to copy the files to DVD it failed ! Came up with an error message similar to the windows one. I do know that the DVD writer is working because I regularly write other DVD's on it and I have run a check on my pic. files and they are showing as not corrupted.

No idea what to do next :confused::confused:

    Hi,

Have you tried a few different types of blank DVDs - I was once told some drives don't like certain brands of disks. Some of the better ones for taking any disks I believe are Lite On Drives (Lite On is owned by Sony btw I believe, but every drive is availabe as a Sony one too, but with a bigger price tag!).

Another posibility, do you have the right type of DVD, as in + - or RAM - Most new drives now take both + or -, some olders just take one type. DVD-RAM is less widely used though.

    Cheers
