I do mine in the microwave and it comes out perfect everytime.. I only use Quakers, 2 min and I use the pouches to measure the milk. The bowl isn't particulary big, but it has some space on it so it can boil...
I've always assumed the one you add water to comes with powder milk??0 -
Thanks for all the replies. I am doomed if I try and use the hob with the kids (OK, the baby) around, and I think my microwave issues may be that I bought a tiny ultra-compact microwave so I can't use the big jug I used to use. I shall be trying with ready brek!0

I just can't cook good porridge. Please don't bother telling me how. I just can't.
If it helps ..... I can't make a white sauce
I'm a reasonably apt cook but I just can't do this ..... I've read recipes & been shown loads of times (BFF is a qualified chef & has shown me & just can't believe what a mess I get in:rotfl:) - it just defeats me!
Re porridge, I use the wee sachets you get, add water and put in the microwave. They don't tend to double in size like some others do!
They were on offer @ Mr A for £1 box (of 12 if just buying the original ones) so may be worth a try.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I used to use the OSS sachets which say to add milk and boil/microwave. I never bothered, just tipped boiling water on them and left for a couple of minutes. Perfectly fine! Much cheaper than the pots, I'm sure I remember seeing in another thread the sachet boxes are even in Poundland at the moment.
Another cheaper but still instant option would be to get an instant porridge (e.g. ReadyBrek) and stir in some standard rolled oats? As that's all it looks like OSS is to me, just a mix of fine and course oats. The fine ones cook quickly, coarse gives the nice texture.0 -
I put 35g of porridge oats into a pan, add enough cold water just to cover them, then onto the hob, stirring until thickened, i than add chopped banana and a tbsp of golden syrup xx0

I use Tesco Value oats. Double the quantity of milk to oats, bung in the microwave for 3 mins. Done. You do need a fairly big bowl as the milk boils and can boil over. Leave to stand then add more milk if too thick.0

I do 35g of oats to 200ml of milk. Leave in the fridge overnight and then in the morning microwave for 2mins (800w), stir and put in for another 1 to 1.30mins but keeping an eye on the jug to ensure it doesn't boil over0

If you google instant porridge recipes there's quite a few online (mostly American). It looks like for most of them they blend the oats and milk powder together so it's finer than normal oats but lumpier than readybrek.0

I just can't cook good porridge. Please don't bother telling me how. I just can't. Maybe if I could concentrate on it but I can't - I end up going to see to the kids and it all goes horribly wrong.
I really like the Oat So Simple pots. You just add boiling water - fool proof and tasty. And I prefer the texture to the porridge I make. But they are blasted expensive.
So how come their porridge can be made just with boiling water? The ingredients are basically rolled oats, sugar and milk powder but I did this at home and it didn't cook the oats.
Do they use some ultra technical heavily steamed oats, or is there a way I can recreate this?
you like them?
I tried one as an emergency breakfast at work
disgusting!0
