Bought a house that has Virgin and no BT line

Hi,
I've just bought a house that has Virgin cable but no BT phone line. In the past I have always had broadband via a BT landline (previously with plusnet and recently with be unlimited).
It seems that Bt charge 130 quid to install a line (unless I take out a broadband contract with them) so i'd like to explore the idea of just taking over the cable.
If there is another cable provider in the area can they use the cable? Is virgin broadband/phone any good? Is there a cable provider who is highly rated for broadband?
Any advice would be greatly appeciated.
BTW I am in North London

Therer are no other cable providers, it's VM or nothing. You can get a BT-based ADSL line installed for a lot less than £130 though, that's just the BT rack rate. Plusnet charged £49 last time I used them. Almost all other providers are cheaper than BT.

Thanks for the advice.
I've contacted BE but I need to get back to them with some details about the line fromBT (primarily whether there is actually a physical line).
Slow going at the moment as the only internet I have is via my mobile.
I also want to speak to virgin but can't find a non 0800/0845 that I can call from my mobile. Tried saynoto0870 but the only number I found was unverified and didn't connect.
Does anybody have a landline number for them please? Also, are they any good?0 -
No harm in getting a good deal from virgin as a new customer. You can always change later on if you don't like them. You can get a very fast broadband service from virgin.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. If you have found an 0800 number for them why not ring it from a payphone, very old fashioned I know.;)MushroomsAndBeans wrote: »Thanks for the advice.

Thanks I hadn't thought of that. I guess payphones do still have their uses!
I actually tried SNT0870 again, and this time searched for Virgin Media (not sure what I searched the first time) and found some landline numbers.
I have been looking at Virgin a bit more, but they seem to have a 16p connection charge, for non-included calls, which seems very excessive (I'm going to create a thread in the Phone forum).
Thanks again.0 -
