firefox can use a lot of ram, which presumably is why your peak commit is massive? did you reboot?
is the noise coming from hard disk, fan or speakers?
run
chkdsk c: /F
to check the hard disk out.
if it has a factory restore partition, it can take literally 10 minutes to do (F11 at boot), after backing up.!!

I did reboot, yes. I had no idea Firefox was massive! I believed the hype that it was lean and cool and awesome.
The noise, I think, was harddrive or maybe fan - I wouldn't know the difference - except it was awful and loud and buzzy and grating, and panicked me.
I'm going to do those final tweaks you suggested after that second log, somewhen tonight, but it is already running faster.
Thank you again for all your help. On other forums I give advice on other topics, and it frustrates me when people never come back and say that they took the advice, or even say thanks, so I want you to know I have followed your links and done what you said, and it made a difference. Cheers!0 -
fan can sometimes catch on the casing, backup in case it is the hard disk, and do a chkdsk c: /F!!
