Hijack This Log Help Please

I'm wondering if it's time to accept defeat with this old laptop. Windows XP. It's got slower and slower. Startup-Lite found no issues. I've got Avast. I use Clean Mem mini monitor. And yet... it's really dragging now.

Ctrl+alt+del with nothing else running brings up this:
Commit charge total is 304028
Commit charge peak is 601184
Physical memory total is 777844

Here's my HiJack This log. I don't know what I'm looking at. Any advice appreciated!

backup and reinstall is the best cure.

you still have a lot running at startup

disable these using msconfig, and run manually if required

have you got (do you use) a graphics tablet?

uninstall any old printers and software for printers.

    disable this service using services.msc

  • Thanks Closed. I don't have the discs to re-install - there is probably a way to make them, I guess. I have an external hard drive I can use. Regarding start up, yes, I think I must have because it takes so long. Yet Start Up Lite reckons it was okay. Is there anything obvious I can ditch that might make a difference? I was wondering about getting rid of iTunes.

Backup and reinstall seems very drastic. Is there a good online guide to do this, especially as I have no discs - I would hate to lose Word and so on.

Ah we cross posted when you were doing your longer reply - sorry! It's a Medion MD95924 I bought from Woolworths, so that dates it somewhat. 1.70GHz processor and 750MB RAM - I upgraded a few years ago. I'll follow those steps in your post above. Many thanks.
Edit: yes I use Bamboo graphic tablet.

if you want to attempt a reinstall:

It may possibly have a factory restore partition, you could try holding F11 at boot to find it, but before you try it, backup

copy (don't move) any data/music/pics etc files to your usb drive

write anything really important to cd/dvd as well.

    and

do a disk image (not clone) backup to your usb drive, using macrium reflect, and create the macrium reflect boot cd - then if anything goes wrong, you can restore the machine to how it is now. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

  • Cheers Closed.
Attempting a new install is my last resort. I was bought a new computer lately, which is now my primary work PC. This laptop is now for internet browsing, and bits and bobs. Useful info though on the backups, I need to study the other thread on backup too to make sure my new PC is protected.
I followed most of the instructions except for turning off Dropbox - actually I need to do that to, in hindsight. I ran Hijack this again. It seems fractionally faster. But CTFOM.EXE showed up again. Why does it repopulate? SHould I be worried?

you can backup any machine with macrium - install it, select image this disk, backup to an img file on your usb drive, create the macrium recovery cd.

if it's your second machine, and if it has a factory restore partition, it's the fastest solution to any speed issues.

    start, run, services.msc
    SSDP Discovery Service
    Remote Registry
    WebClient
    Distributed Link Tracking Client

have you got multiple user accounts, login to them all, and.

Disable ctfmon - control panel, regional and language options, languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok

post another hijackthis log and commit charge after rebooting.

time the reboot, and post more info on slowness.
    !!
    > . !!!! ----> .
  • I don't login - there's just one user account. That's the way I tried to disable ctfom from the original instructions, so it does baffle me it keeps reappearing.

The whole laptop froze up just now and just gave up for a few minutes.

you had trouble with ctfmon last time too

freeze is a bit worrying, when did it happen at boot? - backup time?

tick and fix these using hijackthis

commit charge is coming down, partly because firefox isn't running, there's a lot of graphics tablet related software running, you could possibly disable atwtusb.exe from startup, and run it manually when required.

how is it running, starting up?
    !!
    > . !!!! ----> .
  • Starting up seemed even slower.. even the little music it played was slow. But it runs ok at the moment. It froze when I minimised Firefox to look at the Hijack This log to post up here... I had to Ctrl-alt-del to get it going again. Yup I have posted here before and all the stuff you guys suggested really worked. Until recently.

It has completely failed on me a few times in the past 6 months - it makes a horrible screeching noise until I force a shutdown. Usually this happens a few minutes after start up and each time it's been when I've been on iPlayer or Youtube. Might be a co-incidence.

I'm going to ditch the graphics tablet stuff, as I have uninstalled Gimp and all the other stuff I was using on here.

It's getting on a bit - thanks again for all your help - it has made a small difference but I suspect this laptop is due to be retired soon.

    :-)
