Broadband is working sort of ok but yesterday it kept coming up on the computer ' BT are updating their hub security and you need to choose your own password etc' but it kept working anyway without doing anything. Then when we went to use the landline there was just static.

Rang BT who has booked a call out but said they charge £99 if the fault is within our home or boundary. Nothing has been touched or extended in our house but I asked OH to check in the BT box on the wall anyway - apparently its the older type as its just got 2 screws and not a lift up bit. Inside there is only 2 wires connected?

Since it was working fine up until yesterday I assume that is right for our box although I cant find a diagram with only 2 wires connected, the others are coiled in the back of the box.

Broadband is still working but no dial tone?

Any ideas please.

I've experienced that a couple of times. Both occasions the telephone wire from the pole to the house had broken. No charge either time. Apparently you need just 1 wire to be intact for broadband, but all 3 wires for telephone service.

    Hope you get it sorted!

If you plug a known working handset into the BT test socket and still no dial tone, then the fault is on the BT side and you should not be charged for the repair, unless the damage is user-inflicted.
It's very common for the broadband to still function with the loss of the voice side.
The bell wire may be connected, but is not necessary for modern phones.

    Hi p00,

macman's advice is really good, if the line is still not working after you've tested it with another (working) handset then feel free to send in your details to us and we'll look into this for you.

We have the exact problem today....phone rang this morning telling us we had a "text" message, the wife put the phone down. A minute or two later phone rang again this time as soon as she answered there was a sssszzzzzzzzz on the line and it went dead competely...she said it sounded like something shorting out.

The broadband is ok though ....hence this message! I ahve reported the fault to TalkTalk via mobile, there website says an engineer has been informed (at 12.04pm) and there is a fault at the exchange or on our line.

this I excepted until I read on the TT forum someone had the same thing happen in September and has the same message on the website and a dead phone.....the quickest reaction he has had from TT was a letter 3 days after he cancelled their D/D!.

I am very nervous of changing phone/broadband provider as we are with TT and by all accounts they are difficult to deal with.

How easy is it to change provider? and how quick is it.

    Any help please!!!

It depends who you are changing to. LLU to LLU transfers are rarely easy or possible. A fault on the local loop is down to BT OR- nothing to do with TT.

It's quite common for the broadband to still work without phone service, there is most likely fault on the line as the Broadband and phone line are not the same.

This happened to us a while ago when we were with out a phone connection for a good few days and through out we had broadband all the time.

    Hi Mark,

Thankfully an engineer arrived this afternoon and found that our line had been damaged underground (water probably) somewhere between our house and the closest green cabinet, 550 meters away.

Luckily there was a spare line on the local telegraph pole which he employed...so all is up and running ok...even the broadband seems quicker too!!

It was unfortunate that as we have poor mobile coverage here that TT couldn't text us the details of his arrival. As a result I did expect to see an update on the TT website page which had said that a network engineer had been informed of the problem.

But I am impressed that the problem has been resoved promptly.

    Thank you TT

And thanks Mark for replying on this forum too.
