What power does it use, sorry being blonde:rotfl: does it run off the van's battery?

No - the [electric] heater will only work when the van is on 'hook-up' i.e connected to the mains. 12v electric heaters are available but these would drain the battery pretty quickly.

Only use a gas heater that is professionally fitted/certified/checked in the van and vents the noxious gases outside.

NEVER use a portable gas heater in the van as this would not vent the noxious gases outside the van and could prove fatal.

I totally echo this comment. There have been far too many stories fairly recently of people using heaters at night to keep warm and basically never waking up. Please don't even think about it.

We' ve been wild camping (in a tent) in the Cairngorms over New Year (so, pretty darn cold) and my sleeping bag is down filled so lovely and toasty. I always wear a hat and gloves and socks in bed. If your extremities are kept warm then the rest of you tends to keep warm. The OH has a silk sleeping bag liner which is brilliant but quite expensive but he is a climber so camps over at remote locations regularly so it was worth it for him.

When grocery shopping recently, I bought some hand warmers called Hotties in Adsa. They are basically some charcoal mix that you just shake and it heats up and stays warm for about 8 hours and then can be disposed of. They were on offer for 2 pairs for 1GBP. I ice skate so ideal for me, they're not exactly boiling but certainly do enough to keep the worst of the chill at bay.

Ah right, no we don't tend to camp on sites so no hook ups. The handwarmers are a good idea.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I seriously recommend them. If you wear them within your gloves or socks he (and you) will be toasty and there is no risk of burning yourself either! And they are totally MSE too!

  • Really recommend a good quality down sleeping bag. I've camped in Scottish winters and have been nice and toasty.

I've also been looking for a more modern wind meter/weather station 'thing' for him too (i'm trying to see if i can find one which also has the tide times on) i don't suppose anyone knows about them on this thread too?

  • We have a trailer tent and I always buy my hubby a few wee camping bits for his christmas. Last year I got him his own hotwater bottle - the cover says "grumpy old man"! Other things he has had are a travel towel (microfibre - brilliant bit of kit), various tools, a decent insulated mug, thermal hiking socks, fleece jammies. Or how about a card game or puzzle book?
Hope that gives you a few ideas!
Me debt free thanks to MSE :T
  • I love winter camping, just bought another camper as we had a ball in our previous one (pre-children). pressies....headtorch, spork, nice insulated mug, poundland/home bargains do pack 8 hotchocs / coffess / bovils, hipflask, gerber, bike rack....
  • I would get your OH a RAB down filled sleeping bag,I slept in a freezing cold van in one of these this month and was warm enough. I wouldnt be faffing about with bedding.
My friend got this bag from the RAB factory and it was in the sale reduced to £200 from £500 as its an Alpine bag.
if this is too dear what about a Cree torch or headtorch from Ebay, superbright and miles cheaper than in the shops.
