Computer Monitor says "No Signal"

  • What are you typing this on? If it's a laptop can you plug the screen in to it to see if you get a picture

Yes you should do this but as said the monitor is doing exactly what it should be, it's not receiving a signal from the computer so warning you then going into standby.

You need to try the monitor on a different PC, then again with a different lead. If it works with the original lead then it's likely your video card has died. If it works with a new lead, then there's your problem. If it doesn't work at all, then it's most likely the monitor.

One thing it could be, is you may have a video card with a cooling fan. If that's the case, check the fan is working and that the heatsink isn't clogged with dust. I've had a card refuse to work because of this, but a quick clean of the heatsink got it going again.

It sounds like it must be a problem with the computer from your advice.

To turn off computer I have to hold down the power button as can't do anything else.

Also typing this on my phone do cannot try another computer with the monitor.

Sounds like I'll have to take it into a repair centre to get it checked out (I'd not feel comfortable doing much myself).

    Thanks

It's not a monitor issue because it displays the 'no signal' message correctly. Unlike many error messages, that one means exactly what it says. Eliminate video cable fault (by swapping) and you are left with graphics card fault or failure. Test this by using another monitor or laptop. If still no signal, open up the case and check that the graphics card is seated properly. This is marked 'PCIEX 16' on the link below. This model has a separate graphics card, it will not be expensive to find a suitable replacement on ebay for that, as it's a low spec card.

Yeah I thought so, it does sound like the computer and if you don't feel comfortable looking at it yourself that is fair enough although checking the basics is easy enough and if you change your mind I'm sure myself and others can run you through it.

Before you take the computer to the repair place, try switching it off at the wall, leaving it for a minute or so and then switching it all back on again.

The monitor displaying "No Signal" does not mean that there isn't an issue with the monitor, and so (as suggested) plugging in another computer such as the laptop will verify it is OK.

But it does mean that the monitor is powering up and is capable of displaying. As such, suspicion must fall on the cabling or graphics card.
Agree with you that it's best to eliminate the easy stuff first, so try the monitor on another machine as a first step.

I've had a monitor with a broken connector to motherboard joint. It displayed "no signal" as it wasn't getting one due to the break, but cable and PC were fine.
